Kasr
The Kasrs were militarised cities of the planet Cadia.[6]
Overview
Kasrs were fortresses with resident garrisons of hundreds of thousands.[7c] Each Kasr was protected by rings of massive earthworks studded with gun emplacements and weapons batteries and separated by an inner moat. Passage over the moat was controlled by hydraulic bascule bridges, each one guarded by a heavily armed barbican, and defended by the many armoured fortifications and shatrovies overlooking it. Once inside, the streets of each Kasr are laid out in elaborate geometric patterns, resembling intricate puzzles or the teeth of a key.[1a]
Cadia’s earliest Kasrs had been built in the High Terra style, with grids of wide streets, but the Kasrs built in this design eventually proved to be impossible to defend or hold. In early M32 a chaos invasion managed to easily destroy three of the old Kasrs.[1a] After this the Imperial architects made no concessions for comfort or fashion. Instead the cities were laid out to be death zones to any possible invaders. Any attack would be mired in tunnels, switchback roads, blockhouse ground floors and overhanging buildings. Everything from marketplaces and public auditoriums to bakeries and living rooms doubled as anything from pill-boxes and gun emplacements to ammo dumps and bunkers strong enough to withstand anything but the heaviest of bombardment.[7c] Given the Cadians' mastery of urban warfare, this layout allows them to hold each Kasr for months, even years, should the outer defences fall.[1a]
Kasrkin are Storm Trooper units specifically trained to defend Kasrs.[8] In addition to the cities, some of Cadia's sister Fortress Worlds were also referred to as "Kasrs."[6] These included the planets Kasr Holn, Kasr Partox and Kasr Sonnen.[3b]
