Laager
Laagers are giant nomadic camps that the Ironhead Squat Prospectors form in Necromunda's Ash Wastes. They are formed from Ironhead Land Trains that are made temporarily stationary on the hive world's surface.[1a]
Description
A Laager is a defensive formation where a Land Train's vehicles circle and support each other against attacks. Designed to become semi-permanent fortified settlements, each vehicle connects to the others, creating interlocking defences akin to an outland fortress.[1a]
Laagers are typically formed at drilling sites, with careful setup based on terrain and the mining location. However, in emergencies, Squats can execute a "crash action," quickly transforming the moving column into a fortified laager within minutes, often before enemies can strike.[1a]
When a laager remains in place for an extended period, typically for mining, the Squats establish a settlement within the encircled vehicles. They erect tents, towers, and prefab structures around the central drill head of their new mine. Trenches and roads are built to connect the laager to the surrounding area. While the Squats are prepared to fend off wasteland threats, they also engage in trade with friendly locals, including representatives of the Mercator Gelt and other hivers. Laagers serve as trading hubs and safe havens for prospecting parties, allowing Squats to explore new mining sites while staying close to their clan's resources. This tradition has helped the Squats thrive on Necromunda for centuries.[1b]
