A Lho-stick is a popular Imperial narcotic smoked by humans across the galaxy.[1]

Much like an M2-era cigarette, a lho-stick is made of a rolled paper tube containing a scented plant-derived substance, typically lho-leaf. Lho-leaf is a scented, mildly narcotic, and addictive plant-derived substance.[1][17b] The stick, tube, or cigar is ignited on one end with a lucifer (match), mechanical igniter or any other source of flame. The smoke is then inhaled through the other end of the tube.[16] This end can have a disposable paper filter[3a] and is referred to as the butt[18] or stub.

Some lho-stick brands might use different plant-derived substances, such as sludge weed.[11] In some instances, individuals might lace their lho-stick with other substances. For example, fitobarrier enhancers to take the edge off chronic physical pains.[13] Lho-leaf might be stored in a tin, if an individual is inclined to roll the sticks themselves.[14]

Lho-sticks have been popular in human military forces since M30, if not long before.[12] Items like lho-sticks and alcohol are common luxury rations in the modern Imperial Guard.[17a] Regardless of how common lho-sticks are, officers of various Astra Militarum Regiments still might discourage the use of lho-leaf due its life-shortening long term effects.[15] However, it's still favored by many Guardsmen and PDF as a cheap way to relax before, during, or after combat.[15]

These addictive Lho-sticks are also common among menial workers.[1][17b] Lho-sticks are often used to suppress the hunger of living at the literal bottom of a hive’s food chain. When a citizen can afford little more than starch blocks and stamp to survive off of, the saying "starch, stamps, and sticks" might come to mind; the daily diet of many unfortunate hive dwellers.[8]

Some refer to these as lho-leaf tubes, as opposed to narc-tubes or obscura tubes.[2a] Notable users included Midas Betancore[2b] and Wystan Frauka.[3b]
