A lucifer is slang for a friction matchstick and called such by some humans in the Imperium. Lho-sticks and cigars are often ignited then smoked using lucifers.[1][2]

Trivia

  • Lucifer Matches were an early form of friction match invented by Sir Isaac Holden in 1829. These predecessors to the modern match-stick had a number of problems: an initial violent reaction, an unsteady flame, and unpleasant odour and fumes. Lucifers could ignite explosively, sometimes throwing sparks a considerable distance. Although these were quickly replaced after 1830, the term "lucifer" persisted as slang into the 20th century.
