History

Lysander became the site of large-scale fighting during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The first major battle took place from 774-775.M41, as the remnants of Enok Innokenti's force attacked it on the retreat from Herodor. This invasion was mainly concentrated on the Black Glaciers, the planet's south pole, and was eventually defeated by Imperial forces under Rand-Huppert.[2]

The Chaos Archonate launched another invasion of Lysander in 786.M41 as part of a wider counter-offensive in the Cabal Systems. This time, the fighting focused on the planets' hives and thus became known as the "Orison Wars" or "Mainland Wars". This campaign would drag on for years,[2] with the Imperium attempting to prevent the forces of Chaos from claiming the Hive Vesperus, a dead but strategically significant location. Nicknamed Interceptor City, the Hive became a gruelling conflict of attrition and was known for the lethal rat runs, that the Aeronautica Imperialis' Imperial Navy Wings conducted while fighting there. These were hellish gauntlets through Vesperus, that ensured that even the slightest error would lead to a pilot's death. Among the Imperium's forces that fought there, were the Circus 66 squadron.[1] Heavy fighting was still ongoing by 795.M41.[2]
