Maugan Ra (literally, "the Harvester of Souls" in Eldar) is an Eldar Phoenix Lord from the doomed Craftworld Altansar.[9] He is as a brother to Baharroth, like the moon is to the sun.[4]

History

Maugan Ra was left as a foundling to the library of Biel-Tanigh within the Webway, he was a child during the Fall of the Eldar where he watched the collegiate scholars of the city of Biel-Tanigh pervert their institutions of learning into ones of pride in pursuit of impossible intelligence through investigations into blade and flame upon innocents to prove all others wrong – when Slaanesh awoke all but the "least-touched" perished. Among the least-touched were the twenty Fatecallers to whom the child Maugan Ra attended, carrying them food and working the library gardens. The Fatecallers used the Asurentesh, the Heart of Asuryan, an ancient device from before the library itself to scry the fortunes beyond the realm, through this means learning the purpose of the Tears of Isha and the eventual fate of the Eldar dead in the Warp. The fatecallers then turned their vision upon Slaanesh herself to witness her majesty, which rendered them lifeless and covered their skin with gossamer crystal hairs of entropic residue known as Daemon-Webs, their souls now within the gathered Waystones with the young Maugan Ra as their caretaker. Maugan Ra collected the soul stones, earning his sacred role as "The Harvester of Souls", and placed them inside the Asurentesh as a Matrix.[12]

Maugan Ra became the second student of Asurmen and a member of the Asurya together laboring to spread the Path of the Eldar,[9] and is a mighty Exarch.[3] When Asurmen taught his brethren the Path of the Warrior, it was Maugan Ra that fell furthest from the fold, after Arhra himself. Maugan Ra recognized that the Fall of the Eldar had decimated the Eldar and so the Eldar must exceed the lesser races in skill where they cannot in number.[11] He took on a dark and sinister demeanour, and focused on a style of warfare that could slay his enemies from afar. As his craft progressed, Maugan Ra learned that even the most outlandish weaponry could be used with high precision, and this skill became known as the Maugetar, which became the founding discipline of the Dark Reaper Aspect itself.[3]

Maugan Ra was thought to be the only survivor from a minor expansion of the Eye of Terror which caught Craftworld Altansar in its grip a half-millennium after the Fall of the Eldar,[1] a harrowing ordeal of five centuries itself which saw Chaos encroach upon the craftworld through its Webway portals as Seers worked to seal the ship from the Warp itself.[10] Maugan Ra and a mixed force of Aspect Warriors took arms to seal the Webway gates to Altansar. Only Maugan Ra survived, leaving the craftworld stranded and alone in the Eye.[10]

It is said that Maugan Ra's arrival portends great tragedy, as he has arrived before so many of the Eldar's most dire moments – as during the Doom of Iyanden, when Maugan Ra joined the populace within the Place of Answering as they decided to face their foe and later within the craftworld's Fields of Sanctuary, where he and his Dark Reapers held the line against endless waves of Raveners, Genestealers, Gaunts, and against a tremendous unclassified Tyranid snake-beast.[11]

During the 13th Black Crusade[1] Maugan Ra, along with the Hanndroth Bhanlhari,[10] journeyed into the Eye of Terror and discovered that his Craftworld and its people had survived within the perilous domain of the Chaos Gods and subsequently freed the world from the Eye of Terror. He would later marshal the remains of his home to support the combined Eldar effort against the forces of Chaos. Despite the survival of Altansar, there was no celebration for the return of the long-lost Craftworld for its shadowy and curious ten-thousand year survival within the Eye of Terror was regarded with great suspicion and hostility by the majority of the Eldar race.[1]
