Mjalnar
From Warhammer 40k - Lexicanum
| This article is about the sword of Leman Russ; for the star fort, see Mjalnar (Star Fort). |
Mjalnar, known to Remembrancers as the Sword of Balenight[3][4] or the Sword of Russ[5] was a great Frost Blade wielded by the Space Wolves' Primarch, Leman Russ.[1]
The name Balenight refers to an old legend dubbed Maledica Nocterum' - a dark tale that tells of a weapon that was carried from one tyrant to another during the Age of Strife. While the weapon's origin is ultimately unknown[5], it is said that Mjalnar's teeth were torn from the maw of the Fenrisian Kraken Gormenjarl.[1] The weapon is also said to be ancient, dating back to the Age of Strife.[3] Mjalnar replaced Krakenmaw, the Frost Blade Russ had lost at the hands of Angron during the Night of the Wolf.[2]

Trivia
- Mjalnar is likely a derivative of Mjolnir, the name of Thor's hammer from Norse mythology.
- While being stated to be a Chainsword with Kraken Teeth in several sources[1][2], Mjalnar is depicted both in artwork and on tabletop as resembling a standard sword.
