Mortguard is a Watch Fortress located in the Ultima Segmentum.[1]

History
During the Age of the Dark Imperium, Mortguard's Space Marines battled against tides of xenos that were forced to migrate by the Warp Storms that erupted in the Noctis Aeterna.[2]
Some time later, the Deathwatch of Mortguard became aware of increased alien activity influencing the systems of the Chalnath Expanse. Their suspicions were confirmed by Inquisitor Jazad D'ontor of the Ordo Xenos, who contacted Mortguard's Commander, Agathon, with evidence that the T'au were abroad in the Expanse and were making moves to annex it into their Empire. D'ontor wanted Mortguard's assistance to halt the T'au conquest before the xenos could threaten the nearby Segmentum Fortress of Kar Duniash. However, the T'au were only part of the peril - Agathon believed that the Chalnath Expanse was also experiencing a wave of Genestealer Cult infestations that threatened to overthrow the Expanse.[2]
Agathon's response was to mobilise three Watch Companies, seeking to prevent either the T'au or the Genestealers from conquering the region.[2]
