Biography
Nemiel was formerly a knight of the Order, and later elevated to become a member of the Dark Angels. Nemiel had a constant rivalry with his cousin Zahariel lasting from his youth until their separation after the Dark Angels' actions on Sarosh.[1b] While occasionally jealous of Zahariel's exploits the two remained very close through all their trials.[1c] Only one topic was taboo between Zahariel and Nemiel, and that was Nemiel's participation in the conspiracy to assassinate the Emperor. Nemiel had led Zahariel to a secret meeting shortly before the Emperor arrived on Caliban. This meeting was comprised of a few of high ranking members of the recently disbanded knightly orders of Caliban. Some suggested staging an atrocity but it was eventually decided to assassinate the Emperor. Upon hearing this, Zahariel left in disgust and Nemiel quickly followed him. Nemiel promised to dissuade the men of this course of action.[1d] Whether Nemiel actually tried is unknown but the attempt on the Emperor was made nonetheless.[1e]
In the Dark Angel's first deployment with Lion El'Johnson as Legion Master, the 1st Legion fought against the Sarosh - a bureaucratic people who had been subtly rejecting Jaghatai Khan's White Scar's in their attempts to bring the world to compliance.[1f] After the White Scars departed to continue their campaign, the Sarosh attempted to assassinate Lion El'Johnson and his newly acquired space marines with a nuclear device hidden in the Saroshi diplomat's transport shuttle, thus officially declaring war against the Imperium. Luther and Zahariel managed to eject the shuttle into space, but in the aftermath Luther confessed to Zahariel that he noticed the bomb beforehand and initially decided to do nothing, admitting that if the Saroshi succeeded in killing the Lion he would get command of the Dark Angels and no longer be forced to live in the Lion's shadow.[1g] Sarosh was finally brought to compliance in a decisive battle on one of the planet's orbiting mining stations designated 1Z5 where the Saroshi were attempting to summon a great Chaos Daemon to slay their enemies. Through the concerted effort of Zahariel and his psyker mentor Israfael, the two were able to conjure a powerful psychic bomb which finally slew the daemon and ended the Sarosh rebellion.[1h] Unfortunately this display of psychic energy caused Lion to become wary of the use of Psykers within the Dark Angels. Six hours after the battle on Mining Station 1Z5 Lion El'Johnson, using the excuse of Astartes recruitment supervision, ordered Luther, Zahariel, their respective commands, and many of the legion's Psykers to return to Caliban, while Nemiel was selected to stay with the legion during the Great Crusade.[1i]
Over the five decades that followed, Nemiel was involved in the Legion's deployments on Cyboris and Barrakan, the latter culminating in the Siege of Firebase Endriago which cemented his status as a model Astartes. He was consequently made a Chaplain, and selected to take part in the Lion's action on Diamat.[2a] He was charged with ensuring his brothers were battle-ready, and oversaw logistics and fleet operations as well.[2b] Suspecting his Primarch of harboring ulterior motives, he confronted him[2c] and was eventually informed of the super-heavy siege vehicles put together by the forge[2d]. Nemiel proved instrumental in locating and securing the vehicles[2e], thus unwittingly playing into his Primarch's political maneuvering[2f].
Later in the Heresy, as the Dark Angels were battling Daemons, the Lion wished to reinstitute Librarians to combat them. This was against the edicts of the Council of Nikea, which Nemiel stubbornly reminded his Primarch. In the end, Lion El'Jonson killed Nemiel due to his refusal to back down.[3]
