Neo-vellum was the only moon of the planet Vigilus.[1b][2]

Overview

The moon is controlled by the Administratum and is (at least theoretically) neutral with regards to the politics of the planet it orbits.[1b]

Neo-vellum has many scriptorums whose purpose is to produce logistics reports. These are then placed in containers fitted with grav-chutes before being fired at the planet below, with the message's route to its intended recipient determined by a wondrous machine known as the Datasaint, capable of calculating the exact trajectory necessary for each message based on the relative positions of the moon and planet. However, the Datasaint is so old that many of its mechanisms have failed over time; as a result the majority of the messages never reach their destinations (and even then, the grav-chutes have been known to fail, resulting in terrible accidents - including at least one known fatality).[1b] This situation was not helped by the emergence of the Great Rift, further throwing its calculations off.[2]

The moon also used to host one of the main Astropathic choirs of the Vigilus System, known as the Lunar Choir. However, the opening of the Great Rift ravaged the Choralium and this led Imperial authorities to only attempt Astropathic communication in the most important of circumstances.[1b]

History

When the Vigilus System came under attack by Orks in the Age of the Dark Imperium, Neo-vellum was ignored by the invading greenskins; it is believed by Imperial authorities that this was due to both the moon's lack of opportunities for the orks to engage in a good fight, and the moon's position at the time of the invasion (it was on the other side of its parent planet when the orks arrived in orbit).[1b]

However, the moon was not left entirely unscathed in the conflict. As part of their plans for propagating across Vigilus, the Genestealer Cult of the Pauper Princes made measures to secretly seed Neo-vellum with splinter cults. Primus Ensrod Ghaul was able to smuggle a pair of Purestrain Genestealers onto Neo-vellum via the electro-freighter Zealous Blurt.[1b] Although the Purestrains and many of their slaves were purged by Inquisitor Garalas of the Ordo Xenos and a Skitarii clade, the cults themselves remained active.[1b][2]

The creeping threat of Genestealer Cultists staging an uprising was ultimately irrelevant, though. When the Voidclaw was activated, the gravitic anomalies it generated led to Neo-vellum being dragged out of its orbit towards the Vhulian Anomaly. The remaining inhabitants of the now-rogue moon started rioting, with the xenos-worshipping cultists merely adding to the chaos that erupted.[2]

Geography

Neo-vellum is covered in acidic swamps and ravaged by emerald green gas storms.[1b] The swamps boiled away when the moon was pulled out of its orbit.[2]
