The Order of Notre Mère des Souffrances (Our Mother of Sufferings) is a lesser Order Militant of the Adepta Sororitas, that is an offshoot of the Order of Our Martyred Lady.[3]

History

It was founded twelve centuries ago, in honour of the slain Order of Our Martyred Lady Imperial Saint Emaëlle and shares the older Order Militant's creed and precepts.[3] They are known to sing songs that celebrate their fallen Sisters and those who will yet perish.[1b] The Notre Mère des Souffrances also only has five Commanderies[3][Canon Conflict] and the Order's largest one lies on the Macragge System world Ameton Epsilon IV. This Commandery was built within Epsilon's walled capital, the Dôme, after the Order's first location in the Désert des cendres was destroyed by Tyranids,[3] during the Battle of Macragge's First Battle of Ameton Epsilon IV. Most of the Commandery's Sisters died defending it,[2] and their loss is still felt today by the Order.[3]

In response to its loss, the new Commandery was built within Ameton Epsilon IV's Dôme and contained a larger number of Sisters, along with sophisticated weaponry. Its new members were driven by a desire for revenge against the Tyranids and trained rigorously in case the chance arose to do so. Epsilon's Commandery also made a yearly procession to the old site's location, which has become a sacred site to the Order and which now contained the Mausolée de Notre Mère des Souffrances. Once there, the Commandery knelt in front of the mausoleum to pay their respects to their Sisters, who were slain by the Xenos. Besides this, the Sisters were rather reclusive, though the new Commandery often served as a stopping place for other Adepta Sororitas Orders.[3] However, disaster would strike, when the Tyranids invaded the world once again, in what became known as the Second Battle of Ameton Epsilon IV. In order to protect the mausoleum from the Xenos, the Commandery's Canoness, Angelle, led her Sisters out of the Dôme, despite being ordered not to by every higher authority on Epsilon. [1a] However the Sisters would not have been able to hold the mausoleum, had the world's Imperial Governor, Adrianus Quintex,[1c] not sent a Astra Militarum detachment to aid them.[1d] This was done both for political reasons, as he was worried about the crisis that would erupt amongst Epsilon's population, if the Sisters were defeated by the Tyranids.[1c]

After the Astra Militarum detachment arrived and aided the Sisters though, they were charged with bringing the Order back to the safety of the Dôme. Canoness Angelle refused to leave the sacred site to the Tyranids, and the Astra Militarum's commanders also refused to leave the Order to its fate. This led the detachment to receive new orders to remain there and aid the Sisters in defending the mausoleum.[1f] This lasted until Inquisitor Lord Hull,[1g] who took over the defense of Ameton Epsilon IV,[1e] discovered that a Norn Queen from the world's first invasion by the Tyranids, was responsible for drawing the Xenos to Epsilon once again. The Inquisitor Lord then wanted the creature destroyed immediately and sent the Imperial forces defending the world to attack the Norn's location on Mount Antigonos.[1g] The Notre Mère des Souffrances joined the attack and aided in the efforts to find the Norn Queen's exact location. When the Tyranid hordes facing the Sisters and Imperial forces near them, became too large to advance through, however, they were ordered to defend their current positions. Angelle refused to do so, however, and led her remaining ninety seven Sisters forward once more. They were soon confronted, though, by a horde of Tyranids led by three Carnifex. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Angelle led her Sisters in a charge against the Xenos, but they were all quickly killed. While the Imperium later defeated the Tyranids and saved Ameton Epsilon IV, the Notre Mère des Souffrances' Sisters had all died in the battle.[1h]

Chapitre III - Les Forces de Défense d'Ameton Epsilon IV states that the Notre Mère des Souffrances only has Commanderies.[3] However, Chapitre I: Théâtre d'Opération Ameton Epsilon IV - Phase 1: Invasion - J+8 instead states the Order has a Preceptory on Ameton Epsilon IV.[1a]
