Ottar the White was a Space Wolves Wolf Lord, who commanded the White Wolves Great Company. He wielded the relic Power Axe Lightbringer and rode a Thunderwolf into battle.[1a]

History

During the 13th Black Crusade, he led the White Wolves to aid in Cadia's defense[1a] aboard their Strike Cruiser Stiklestad.[1d] Most of the Great Company would accompany Ottar to the Fortress World,[1b] while a small amount of his Space Wolves forces remained aboard the Strike Cruiser.[1c] As the battle raged across Cadia, the Wolf Lord spotted the Black Legion Warband of the Chaos Lord Zufur attempting to remove one of Cadia's Pylons from the Elysion Fields. Ottar vowed not to let that happen and led the White Wolves to battle against the Warband. However during the battle, Zufur's Warband separated Ottar from his Great Company,[1a] though he called them to his side.[1b] While he fought valiantly, the Wolf Lord was severely wounded by a Melta blast,[1a] before the White Wolves could reach him.[1b] After seeing this, Zufur stopped his Warband from killing Ottar as the Chaos Lord wanted that honour for himself. Though the Wolf Lord attempted to kill Zufur, his wounds slowed his body and the Chaos Lord was able to stab Ottar with a Daemon Sword, which devoured the Wolf Lord's soul[1a]. His death, however, sent the White Wolves into a vengeful frenzy and they tore into Zufur's Warband. Such was the ferocity of the Warband and Great Company's attacks against each other, that Black Legionaries from other Warbands were drawn to the battle. Only the Space Wolf Skarp-Hedin survived afterwards, with Zufur's Warband destroyed and the surviving Black Legionaries fleeing the battle. A mournful Hedin then apologized to Ottar for failing to save him and then grabbed the Wolf Lord's power axe, Lightbringer, before seeking more foes to kill. As he left the White Wolves behind, Hedin thought that the remains of Zufur and his Warband made a fitting cairn for Ottar.[1b]

Trivia

Ottar is not among the Space Wolves Chapter's Wolf Lords named, during the 13th Black Crusade. Either the author made a mistake, or Ottar and the White Wolves are meant to be part of the 13th Great Company.
