Right of Settlement
The Right of Settlement is a reward Imperial Guard Regiments are promised for years of successful service, allowing them to permanently settle and garrison a conquered planet as a new homeworld.[1a][4]
Overview
When a regiment is raised it does not typically return to its homeworld. If victorious, it will move from one warzone to another. Often attrition will outpace replenishment, and regiments under combat strength or who have lost their leaders may be folded into others. Should a regiment survive and have served for 10 years, they are usually be transferred to armies of conquest, to take part in the taking of an entire world. The Right of Settlement is hard-earned. When the Rights to Settlement are invoked for a regiment, a recently conquered or colonized world is theirs by right.[1a][4] With Rights of Settlement, the commanding officer of the regiment often becomes the new Planetary Governor. It is roughly common practice for choice staff to be given prominent positions within the government for their service, and with these new roles filled, younger officers move up and accept higher positions within the Guard regiment, which in turn becomes the planet's first Planetary Defense Force. The regiment is then reclassified by the Departmento Munitorium, based on the name of the planet.[1x] The people of these worlds become the hardy descendants of the regiment that had earned them.[4] As the men and women of these regiments settle down and garrison their newly earned home, the children they raise grow up immersed in the culture of the Imperial Guard, often becoming whiteshields and the next generation of the regiment, ready to continue the war effort when the Imperium calls on the regiment again.[5]
Often by the time right of settlement is earned, entire regiment may differ vastly in appearance from the original state in which it was raised. Years of fighting would lead to replacements in equipment and uniforms, sometimes taken from other regiments that have been folded into them. Improvisation to local conditions may also change the regiment, as it adapts to a new planetary biome or climate that might differ greatly from their original homeworld.[4] However, other regiments may yet retain the essential spirit and behavior despite this, as is the case of the Baran Siege Masters, whose deep forests and rolling steps of their new homeworld differ greatly from the planet of their ancestry, radioactive and barren Krieg.[6]
Extraneous circumstances can delay the Right of Settlement, such as the Sabbat Worlds Crusade or extreme demand for Imperial troops in the sector.
[Help]
The Right of Settlement was particularly sought-after by the Tanith First and Only, as their homeworld of Tanith was destroyed by the forces of Chaos.[3a][3b]
