However she took the Oath of the Penitent, after the mission she led on Balta ended in disaster. It began, when Selene and 9 Sisters she commanded, entered a cave to reclaim a relic from the world. However, while the man who gave the information to the Canoness claimed they would face no danger in doing so, the Sisters were soon ambushed. Arrayed against them were a large number of Cultists and Daemons of Nurgle, and seeing them caused Selene to falter. Though it was only for a moment, it was enough for the forces of Nurgle to swarm the Sisters. As they fought, Sister Superior Veridyan and Battle Sister Cassia raced the relic to the Sisters' shuttle for safekeeping. They then returned to the others, but found them all dead, except for Selene who had been badly wounded.[1]

The Canoness blamed herself for the Sisters' deaths and told the two to escape and leave her to die with the fallen Sisters. Veridyan refused, though, and told Selene that her life was not hers to forfeit. The Canoness agreed, but said she would seek the Emperor's forgiveness for her failings, by taking the Oath of the Penitent. Just after saying so, another group of Cultists and Daemons attacked them. Despite being heavily outnumbered, though, the Sisters fought together and succeeded in escaping from Balta with the relic. Afterwards, Selene would give a report about what happened and took full responsibility for her Sisters' deaths. She claimed she had been too trusting of the man, who had given her the relic's location. Selene had believed him that they would face no danger and this had lulled her into a false sense of safety. Her mistake in judgement would have killed them all, had it not been for Veridyan and Cassia. Their actions, and theirs alone, had allowed them to escape with the relic and their lives. Selene concluded, by stating that because of her failures on Balta, she no longer considered herself a Canoness or a Sister of Battle. Instead Selene once again took the Oath of the Penitent and became a Sister Repentia. Selene could only pray that by doing so, she would earn absolution for her failings - either in life or in death.[1]
