Skane was a Space Marine Sergeant of the World Eaters' 8th Company during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.[1a]
Biography
Serving in the 8th Company under Khârn, Skane commanded a Destroyer Squad[1a] and was the one to find his captain on the battlefield of Isstvan III.[1b] Like most Destroyer Astartes, he suffered from various ailments caused by the weapons he wielded[1e], and had been fitted with augmetic vocal cords after an aggressive cancer had destroyed his biological ones.[1d] After the battle of Armatura, he supported Lotara Sarrin when the Flag-Captain challenged Delvarus for dereliction of duty[1c], and he lost a forearm to the Ultramarines during the destruction of Nuceria.[1f]
Near the end of the Heresy, Skane served aboard the Legion's flagship Conqueror, as it journeyed to take part in the invasion of Terra. By that time, however, the Conqueror had fallen under the influence of Khorne, which had led the flagship to become a hostile environment to those aboard it. This led to the rapid depletion of supplies and manpower - chiefly due to the World Eaters losing themselves to mindless rages and then attacking anyone near them. Skane was among the worse to suffer under the Conqueror's influence and he began to struggle to control his radiation ravaged body. This eventually led him to violently corner the Conqueror's Captain Lotara Sarrin and tell her they needed to leave the flagship for their own safety. Captain Sarrin agreed with Skane, as he had voiced an opinion that many aboard the Conqueror now held. However this was not shared with the majority of the World Eaters aboard the Conqueror, who would view this abandonment as a mutiny, so Skane and Sarrin met secretly to begin planning their escape.[2]
They met with others who wished to leave as well and when they had made their final preparations to leave, their group had grown to include fifty World Eaters and over three hundred crew members. Their plan to escape was then put into action, the next time the World Eaters' fleet exited the Warp. As per their plan, Captain Sarrin had secured five shuttles to take the escapees to the Legion frigate Bestiarius and one by one they were filled and left the Conqueror behind. Skane and, his fellow World Eater escapee, Captain Maruuk, however, stayed beside Sarrin, who as Captain of the Conqueror would need to escape aboard the last shuttle, to avoid arising any suspicion.[2]
When they reached the shuttle though, Khârn confronted them before they could escape and declared them to be traitors. As Khârn then made his approach, Skane charged him and told Captain Sarrin to escape while he held Khârn back. He was no match for Khârn, however, and was soon beaten to the ground, as the last shuttle fled the Conqueror. Khârn then prepared to kill Skane, but the Destroyer Sergeant was content the others had managed to escape. This quickly changed when Sarrin appeared beside Khârn and Skane learned she had betrayed their group and had never planned on leaving. Now helpless and stricken with grief from Sarrin's betrayal, Skane could do nothing as Khârn raised Gorechild to end his life. However before the blow could land, Sarrin stopped Khârn and stated as Captain of the Conqueror, Skane's death should be her responsibility. With that, she leveled her pistol at Skane's face and shot him through his eye. Shortly afterwards, Sarrin gave the order to destroy the escapees' shuttles and brought an end to their mutiny.[2]
