There are three usages of the rank of Captain. One in the Adeptus Astartes, another in the Imperial Guard and the last in the Imperial Navy
In the space marines, the rank of captain is given to the marine who is commander of a company of his battle brothers. This is a prestigious rank, and often the Captain of the First Company is also the Chapter Master. In the game, the position of Commander reflects this rank.
Army Rank
A captain of the Imperial Guard is a position above Lieutenant, but below Colonel. A captain would usually be in command of five platoons, a company. However, under battle conditions, this may change. A captain could end up commanding the regiment, if the colonel becomes a casualty. However, in this case, the captain would probably recive a battlefield promotion to colonel. More likely, a captain would be given command of 2 or more companies, in order to forefil fufill an objective. In game terms, this position is reflected by the Senior Officer position.
Navy Rank
In the Imperial Navy the rank of captain implies that the bearer has command of his ship. On board his ship, his world is law, above that of any other, save, maybe, The Emperor's. An Imperial Navy captain recives orders from a Rear Admrial. He would then interpret these orders, and have them carried out by delegating tasks to his 1st Lieutenants.
