The '''Adeptus Custodes''' form the [[Emperor]]'s personal guard and are charged with serving and protecting the master of mankind. Numbering a thousand warriors, there are always several hundred of them available in the [[Imperial Palace]] as well as a certain number of guards who never leave the Emperor's side.
Their armour and clothing are traditional, mirroring those of the first Custodes. While they have access to the same weapons and gear as the [[Adeptus Astartes]], their standard armament is the [[Guardian Spear]], which is a [[Power weaponWeapon]] with a built-in [[Bolter]]. These spears are also on their banners, badges and other regalia, and is their most distinctive trait. They also have access to all of the Emperor's personal ships and transports.
The Adeptus Custodes were the first group of genetically and psychologically engineered warriors that the Emperor created. Their only task was the protection of the Emperor during Earth's conquest before the [[Great Crusade]]. Stronger even than [[Space Marines]] and fiercely loyal to the Emperor, they were frequently sent along with [[Legiones Astartes]] to ensure that the Emperor's will was done during the Great Crusade. For example, a small contingent led by [[Chief Custodian Constatin Valdor]] assisted [[Leman Russ]] and his [[Space Wolves]] during the cleansing of the [[Thousand Sons]]'s homeworld of [[Prospero]] right before the [[Horus Heresy]].
