These descriptions could be considered consistent with the visions experienced by Magos Darvus. This would suggest that the Umbra are a fragment of a greater entity, perhaps one of the old ones or some other unknown warp entity. Noting that they are often found attached to warp engines or in area’s suspected of being entrances to the Eldar [[Webway]] may denote an attempt to return to the warp.
It is strongly suggested in the book [[Xenology]] that the god split to create the Umbra is in fact Qah, the same god worshiped by the Hrud as "He who lingers". There is a discrepancy here however because Qah was said to have left 500,000 years ago promising to return when the tribes gathered to defeat the Yaam-khoh but the being that forms the Umbra was split by Slaanesh.
