There is little difference in appearance between a regular Pylon, and a Gauss Pylon however the armament of the Pylon varies between the two. Instead of the unnamed weapon on the regular Pylon which is capable of emitting a Particle Accelerator or Flux Arc attack, the Gauss Pylon is equipped with a formidable Gauss Annihilator, which is capable of firing a Focussed Beam (similar to the Particle Accelerator attack, however stronger) or projecting a Gauss Flux Arc. The Gauss Annihilator is capable of rapid traverse, and when working in conjunction with the Gauss Pylon's impressive target lock and guidance systems, becomes a real threat to both aircraft and group troops. ³

The final difference separating the Pylon and Gauss Pylon is the Phase Shift Generator install in the Gauss Pylon. Through an unknown mechanism, this allows nearby Necrons to occasionally shrug off fire that would usually render their armour useless as protection.³
