In the novel Dawn of War: Tempest it is told that these Ultramarines, perhaps Varnus as well, actually were Alpha Legionnaires, since the shoulder guards revealed to the Blood Ravens on Lorn V had had an Ultramarine symbol painted on top of the Hydra symbol of the Alpha Legion. This is however a little confusing, since Ahriman is leading the sorcerer squad, which would make them Thousand Sons, not Alpha Legionnaires.
