The Medusa system is located in the Ultima Segmentum and is an Imperial held system, but is also the heart of the 2006 global campaign. The system is made up of the following planets.

System
The Medusa system is made up of ten planets ranging from Medusa I to Medusa X.

Medusa IV
Medusa IV was once the primary planet in the Medusa system, however after the Medusa Schism (see below), it was purged through Exterminatus and is now completely barren. Before its destruction, it was roughly equivilent to Terra conditions, with an orbital distance of 1.12AU, a gravity of 1.09G and an average temperature of 13 degrees celsius. It is now classed as Dead/Exterminatus and a tithe grade of Adeptus None, population n/a.

Medusa V
Medusa V is the centre of the Medusa system since the Medusa Schism (see Medusa system) and is a mining world and staging post for many space craft, be they Imperial Navy, Explorator fleets or Rogue Traders. It has an orbital distance of 1.41AU, gravity of 1.12G and an average temperature of 9 degrees celsius. It has a tithe grade of Exactus Tertius and has three orbital space docks, one named Chigrin 1 (and presumaly the other two being Chigrin 2 and Chigrin 3). It has a population of roughly 4,500,000,000.

Chigrin 1
Chigrin 1 is one of three Crimeon Class Space Dock in orbit above Medusa V. It has 2,922 Adeptus Mechanicus personnel and around 5,000 Imperial Navy security personnel. It has an armament of laser defence batteries and 16 torpedo tubes, and is defended by a Class 9 Void Shield. It is enhanced by the presence of a Philemon Pardox class enhanced auspex array, allowing detailed scans of a vast area of space.

Medusa VII
Medusa VII is a Dead World with an Ordo Xenos quanantine placed over it for unusual Necrontyr activity. It is believed to be a Necrontyr homeworld and surface surveys have been need impossible. All life on the planet has been destroyed and by the way the planet has weather, it is guessed to have happened hundreds of thousands of years ago. A strange energy spike was picked up from Medusa VII along with two on Medusa V itself, possibly the indication of some form of Necrontyr teleportation system. It has an orital distance of 19.18AU, gravity of 1.216G and an average termperature of n/a. It seems to be missing a large chunk of land, vastly reducing its land mass and subsequently its gravity.

Medusa VIII
Medusa VIII is a gas giant which was postulated to contain resources which could be harvested from its atmosphere. Research vessels sent to investigate have disappeared in dubious circumstances and Fleet command have recommended the abandonment of investigations, simply to preserve their ships. It has an orbital distance of 24.98AU, gravity of 2.5G and an average temperature of n/a.

Van Grothe's Rapidity
Not technically part of the system, the Rapidity is the reason for the settling and creation of the Medusa V situation. It is expanding rapidly and threatens to engulf a large area of the region. It also has the name of Hell's Slingshot due to the ability to sling shot ships through it in order to gain vast speeds and reduce travel times. It was originally found in 241.M37 by Carral Van Grothe who went on to found the Medusa colonies. Originally its status was Stable and Threat level Not-Classified, but has recently changed to status Unstable - Malefic Ultra and Threat level Omega due to the recent growth. It is said to destroy Medusa V within weeks or months.

History
Medusa IV
Medusa IV was originally the first planet to be colonised, and as such was the most important. It was a massive mining and supply opperation in an ideal place to help traders and other ships resupply before trying to sling shot through the nearby warp storm, Van Grothe's Rapidity. It was first investigated by the Iron Hands and as such this is where the name came from, the home of the Iron Hands. Great cities were built within months and civilians arrived by the millions. Then came the Medusa Schism and the planet was scoured in Exterminatus.

Medusa Schism
The Medusa Schism was during a prolonged period of isolation due to high warp storms from the Rapidity. The largest Hive Cities on Medusa IV declared themselves independent from the Imperium. The planetary forces reacted quickly to suppress the rebels but the rot went much deeper than many thought. It turned out that the rebels were well armed and openly declared themselves the servents of the Chaos gods. War waged in the streets lasted for weeks and more and more Hives declared themselves for Chaos. Vast areas of agriculture were put to the torch and millions died. Eventually, the desperate astropaths sent calls for aid, although these went unanswered due to the warp storm. Only Medusa V could respond. They bravely set up a militia force of sorts and set off for Medusa IV. The force was made primarily of miners and went to Medusa in commandeered bulk freighters and supply vessels. For two and a half years Medusa V's army kept the citizens still loyal from the wrath of Chaos. Eventually however, the damage done was so much that even when the Ultramarines Second Company managed to arrive, there was little they could do. The Inquisition was dispatched and eventually came to the conclusion that Exterminatus was necessary. With the aid of the Administratum and Cult Mechanicus, they managed to get a one week period in which to evacuate as many workers as possible, as to destroy so many loyalists would create such a destruction to the industries of the system as to be difficult to recover. Millions escaped while the Medusa V and Ultramarine warriors fought a rearguard action but eventually these were forced to retreat and the Inquisition, under Inquisitor Baptiste moved in with atmospheric incinerators to make the atmosphere boil away, destroying all life. The heat was such that the cities melted and then planet glowed for a month. Eventually, those who survived made it to Medusa V and set up new cities having been vetted by the Inquisiton. They were soon integrated into Medusa V and industries exploded with activity, creating a new golden age.
