These books in the Horus Heresy series are unique in the Warhammer 40000 book franchise as instead of detailing individual charachters and battles that have little consequence in the overall story these books detail the events that lead up to the present time. Additionally it takes a big political standpoint with some of the characters not even warriors of any kind who are caught up in Horus's coup such as [[Ignace Karkasy]], a Poet and [[Euphrati Keeler]] a [[Remembrancer]] (Journalist).
The novel was first published in October 2006. Each print run has a different colour for the titles: First was gold, second in silver and third in bronze.
