The Third War for Armageddon saw the bloodiest fighting around Hive Helsreach. Again it was its port facilities that drew the attention of the Orks as well as the prospect of a good fight. It was estimated that around three million humans died in its defense.
During this campaign, overall command of the hive's major defence fell to Reclusiarch Grimaldus of the Black Templars after contact was lost with Colonel Sarren of the Armageddon Steel Legion, the mastermind behind the hive's defence. An attack was attempted by the Orks of the Crooked Moons tribe against the south and east side of the Hive which were repulsed by the Salamanders Space Marine Chapter while the Titans of the Legio Metalica and Legio Invigilata bombarded the Ork landing positions to the north from within the Hive.
Along Hel's Highway, Ork forces often broke through the defences and assaulted the north of the Hive. Despite these constant attacks and setbacks, the population of Hive Helsreach fought like their forefathers, with a vigour and zeal that made the Orks pay dearly for every inch of ground they took.

Towards the end of the war, a tech-marine of the Black Templars, at the command of Grimaldus recovered an ancient mechanicus weapon from a secret facility in the desert, after disabling the myriad defences and traps around the machine and awakening the machine-spirit. Enlisting the (reluctant) help of the other mechanicus forces within the city, the templar fired a single shot from the machine, destroying a huge enemy gargant called Godbreaker before retreating from the city.
The destruction of Godbreaker allowed imperial forces to hold out against the ork hoard and await reinforcement. And, although in excess of 90% of the defenders were killed, they were successful.
