== Homeworld ==The homeworld of the Night Lords was Nostramo, a world of perpetual night.1a Plagued by both systematic corruption and endemic violence, Nostraman society was radically altered and pacified by the actions of the Night Haunter, at least for a time. Eventually however, conditions on the planet backslid to the point that the VIII legion primarch ordered its destruction.1a Nostramo has not existed as a world for ten thousand years, although traces of its once presence can still be found by those who know where to look.2a
History
===The Great Crusade=======Formation====CurrentlyPrimarch Leman Russ, almost nothing is known of the VIII legion before grew up on the discovery of Konrad Curze, other than it was made up distant planet of TerranFenris Astartes and not noted to be particularly different to the main body , a snow-covered world inhabited by primitive, warlike tribes of humans. He was raised by a pack of the massive Fenrisian Wolvesthat prowl the snowy lands.===Combat Disposition and Record=======The Lord He was discovered by a man named Thengir, King of the Night====After his discovery by the EmperorRuss, Konrad Curze underwent who had organized a period party of training under hunters to clear the tutelage of Fulgrim, primarch wolf pack from his lands. As most of the Emperor's Children, wolves were slaughtered the young man was captured and brought to Thengir who introduced took him to not only wider military strategemsinto his care, but also Imperial culture, specifically that under the name of Terra itselfLeman Russ. Following this period, Curze was placed at  The Primarch learned the head ways of his legionman quickly, who are known to have adapted to his philosophies quickly and with diligence, as well as intelligently transforming the primarch's beliefs into military tacticsmany legends sprung up about him. CurzeUpon his adopted father's experiences upon Nostramo in his self-appointed role as the Night Lord had instilled in him the philosophy of terrordeath, whereby he had inspired obedience to the law by fear leadership of extreme punishment. This societal philosophy translated into the military tactics of swift, sudden and decisive strikes often carried out Russ passed to excess, as well as making sure the enemy knew who had hit themLeman. The Night Lords therefore developed Leman became a practice mighty leader, winning many victories, often fighting alongside packs of regularly using excessive force to defeat their enemiesFenrisian Wolves, as well as publicising these actions so that other potential transgressors would be well aware led by two of what could happen to them should they break faith with the Imperiumhis Wolf-brothers who escaped Thengir's hunters.1a
This approach made the Night Lords well-suited for dealing with worlds brought into the Imperium during the Crusade who were subsequently lax in achieving full compliance, or who even threatened to rebel. They were heavily utilized as a force that solidifed the Imperium's grip after initial pacification was achieved; as this sort of endeavor mirrored what Curze did as the Night Haunter on Nostramo, the Night Lords excelled at reinforcing the The Emperor's will - through fear. To increase their effectiveness in this regard, Curze encouraged travelled to Fenris having heard word of the Night Lords to decorate their power armour with death imagery. This gave them a tremendously terrifying reputation, one exploits of Leman Russ realizing that would cause many planetary rulers to immediately make good any outstanding tithes, make sure Imperial laws were being followed and sometimes would entirely stop an incipient rebellion at they could only be the mere rumour work of Night Lord retaliationa Primarch.1aAt first Leman Russ refused to pay Him homage, going as far as challenging Him.
As The challenges consisted of three different contest, one being eating, the Great Crusade wore on other drinking, and the Night Lords began third being a fist-fighting one. Russ managed to slowly receive replacement Marines from Nostramo (which had meantime fallen back to its pre-Night Haunter ways), beat the criminal element of Nostraman society, including murderers Emperor at both eating and rapistsdrinking, began but the third challenge was more to fill the ranks1a. This, in addition to CurzeEmperor's probable insanityliking. Having at first seemed like a disappointment,3 initiated a downward spiral for drunkard and a boaster, the LegionPrimarch suddenly launched a furious attack.====Descent====While it may be possible that This very challenge proved to the Emperor tacitly or even secretly authorized the Night Lords' excessive tactics,2 the legion that this was eventually questioned over its increasingly extreme sanctioning indeed one of Imperial citizenryhis sons, especially by some of Russ fighting with outstanding speed and power. After having the other primarchs, a brotherhood that Curze had never felt a part of. Apart, that was, disappointment lifted from Fulgrim. When his brothers began to turn on him, Curze turned to spirit by his tutor and supposed friend for counsel and confession. A sufferer of prophetic visions apparently all of his lifeson's ferocity, Curze told Fulgrim of his own great fear; that he had forseen the Emperor killing him stopped holding back and that the Legiones Astartes would endlessly battle each other quickly found an opening in an endless civil warLeman Russ' defences. Fulgrim, shocked and worried by Curze's behaviour and mental state, informed their brother The Emperor raised his power fist (who was present in , knocking the same warzone as Curze Primarch out with a single blow that would have killed a lesser man. Leman Russ awoke later and Fulgrim at blamed his loss on the alcohol, but in the time) of these visions end admitted defeat and claims. Dorn then confronted Curze over what he saw as this dishonourable besmirchment of swore loyalty to the Emperor's name; the conversation came to blows, with Curze beating his brother bloody. Subsequently accepting being placed under arrest for this action, Curze entered confinement to await the judgement of the other Primarchs.1a
Such He fought well during the Great Crusade, gaining the reputation as a verdict was never madecunning and fierce, as before well as slightly unstable, warrior and leader. During a conclave pacification war, the Dark Angels aided the Space Wolves, and the leader of the primarchs could be madethis particular planet insulted Leman Russ's honour, Konrad Curze decided and so he wanted to refuse defeat the leader personally for the entire process insult. The Dark Angels and escaped from detentionSpace Wolves, slaying members of both lead by their prospective Primarchs assaulted the tower where the leader was. Leman Russ burst into the throne room just in time to see Imperial Fists and El's ChildrenJonson in beheading the processleader. He swiftly rejoined Angry that the honour was not his legion4 , Leman Russ marched up to the Lion and took his fleet punched him in the jaw. This lead to Nostramoa battle that lasted a week or more, until finally Russ saw how immature their squabble was and started laughing. Lion El'Jonson took this as Russ mocking him and punched Leman Russ into unconsciousness before leaving the planet that had betrayed him, where he ordered all the ships in with his fleet legion. This led to fire upon a bitter feud between the single weakness in Legions (and subsequent Chapters), which lasts to this day - although recent events may finally have led to an end to the planet's adamantium crustrivalry, causing though it is still customary for selected champions from both sides to be destroyedengage in a (usually) non-lethal duel.1a,47
Although the Night Lords had gone rogue, the Horus Heresy erupted before anything could be done about it.
Horus Heresy
Despite having gone rogueJust prior to the Horus Heresy, the Space Wolves came into conflict with their brother Space Marines once again. The Primarch of the Thousand Sons Space Marines, Magnus, had ignored the Night Lords Emperor's command to not dabble in sorcery. The Space Wolves were one then ordered by the Emperor to bring Magnus before the him to answer for this. Russ, however, was convinced by Horus to launch an attack on the Thousand Sons rather than attempt to negotiate. The surprise assault upon the Sons' home world of Prospero was furious, and rather successful; however, many of the seven Legions dispatched to destroy Sons, including Magnus himself, escaped into the wild region of space known as the gathered Sons Eye of HorusTerror. A blood feud still exists between Wolves and the survivors of the Thousand Sons, who are now dedicated to the Chaos God World EatersTzeentch. During the Horus Heresy, the Space Wolves were far from Earth, alongside the Dark Angels, and were unable to assist their loyalist brethren in the fighting at the capital world, Death GuardTerra. Knowledge of the imminent arrival of the two Legions, which would tip the balance in favour of the loyalists, pushed Horus into allowing the Emperor to personally attack him in a gamble to swiftly end the war. The two Legions arrived just after the battle concluded, with Horus dead and the Emperor mortally wounded. ===Post Heresy===Leman Russ was devastated by his inability to save the Emperor. After the war was fully completed, and all resistance was crushed, Russ held a great feast, at which he declared he would be leaving, and would return for the 'final battle'. He then vanished, and is said to have gone into the Eye of Terror to continue hunting down the traitorous Marines who fought against the Emperor during the Horus Heresy. Another tale has it that Russ vanished after chasing a Kabal of Dark Eldar who had raided Fenris right into their city of EmperorCommorragh. Any evidence for either theories is yet to be presented and there is a large possibility that both are mere fables. The true whereabouts of the Primarch remains a mystery. Harek Ironhelm was the chapter's ChildrenGreat Wolf during M32 . Ironhelm sought for many years to bring Magnus to battle. Several times Magnus appeared to him in visions among the ruins of devastated cities and taunted the Great Wolf for his inability to stop him. After many fruitless efforts to catch up with the raiders Harek became obsessed, and took to searching worlds along the edge of the Eye of Terror itself. Eventually he found what he believed to be the Thousand Sons' secret base on Gangava and launched a full-scale attack against it. This was a deception to draw the Space Wolves from their homeworld, leaving it undefended; Gangava was held by a Chaos force allied to Magnus but it served only as a distraction, allowing a massive Thousand Sons' Fleet to besiege Fenris. The Fang was held by only a small force of Space Wolves and their servitor-thralls. For forty days and forty nights the Thousand Sons assaulted the citadel. Bjorn the Fell-handed, most ancient of the Space Wolves dreadnoughts, was woken from his long sleep and took charge of the defence. The assault was held at bay as a force of scouts under Haakon Blackwing escaped to Gangava to locate Harek. Shamed and furious, Harek Ironhelm returned to meet Magnus in battle on the slopes of the Fang itself. Although Magnus was terribly wounded, Harek, a Marine, couldn't stand against a Primarch exalted to Daemonhood. Harek was slain, but the Thousand Sons were defeated and scattered. ===Notable Battles===*First War for Armageddon Logan Grimnar led 300 Space Wolves alongside 100 Grey Knights against Angron and a diabolic horde of Khorne.*Third War for Armageddon.5 The Space Wolves fielded 5 Great Companies in the defence of IsstvanArmageddon .*systemThirteenth Black Crusade.6 The Space Wolves committed 12 Great Companies against this Black Crusade.**Note: The Space Wolves are 1of only 4 Space Marine Chapters to have fought in both the Third War for Armageddon and against the Thirteenth Black Crusade.6,7*Deployed Land Raider Helios against Orks on Centius Prime.8*Saw action against the forces of the Draxian Incursion on Medes 841.8 *Saw action against Chaos at Hesperida. After securing the temple, they tried to recover the Spear of Russ, but it was lost to the warp in order to close a portal being formed by marines of the Thousand Sons. ==Organization==The Space Wolves are known for their fiercely anti-authoritarian behaviour. They strongly resist the central command structure of the Imperium, and refuse to follow the dictates of the Codex Astartes, which lays the structure and tactics to be used by all Space Marines. Their army has a strong Viking feel to them along with many wolf references and long drinking sessions, right down to their wolf-like teeth and heightened senses. While records  They are very superstitious and only rarely make use of advanced technology used by other Chapters, such as teleportation.  ===The Great Companies===The twelve Great Companies are a defiance of the standardized Codex laid out by Roboute Guilliman. Each Great Company is based in the Fang, the Space Wolves Chapter Fortress and is led by a Wolf Lord, who answers only to the Great Wolf. Each Great Company is fully self-contained, made up of a body of fully armed troops as well as the spacecraft necessary to transport the Great Company. They each also have their own forges and customs. The size of each Great Company is unknown but the Space Wolves Legion was said to be one of the smaller Legions. As each Great Company serves as an independent army, they maintain a much greater number of troops as opposed to codex companies. Speculation has ranged from between 150 and 1000 marines per Great Company. Each Great Company is made of a number of packs that function much like a Space Marine squad. However, their tactical usage varies greatly. Each squad is unique in that it doesn't ever receive reinforcements, making the higher level squads smaller in number compared to the lowest Blood Claw pack. Many Blood Claw packs start with as many as fifteen marines. However, losses take their toll, and by the time a Blood Claw squad reaches the level of Grey Hunter, normally only 9 or 10 are left. As they age, further losses limit the squad sizes of Long Fangs down to just 5 or less. ====Blood Claws====The Blood Claws are young Space Wolves who have just finished their most basic training and initiation rites including drinking from the Cup of Wulfen and surviving. They function like Assault Squads, but they do not clearly explain why normally use jump packs. Contrary to normal Space Marine doctrine the new initiates of the Space Wolves are not assigned to a single scout company. Space Wolf Blood Claws are instead assigned to any one of the Great Companies. ====Skyclaws==== The reckless trouble makers from the Blood Claw packs are reassigned to the Skyclaws as their 'reward' and are given jump packs to aid in their eagerness to charge straight into the line of battle.10b ====Grey Hunters====Grey Hunters are Blood Claws who have survived the trials on the field of battle, combat experience having made them less impulsive and thus less suited as a force of pure assault. Comprising the majority of the Space Wolves these marines fill the Tactical Squad role. ====Long Fangs====Long Fangs are the next level up from Grey Hunters. These take the role of Devastator Squads. Long Fangs are the only Space Wolves regarded as experienced enough to individually choose what to target with their heavy weapons. ====Wolf Guard====The Wolf Guard are made up of those Space Wolves seen to have performed an apparent rogue legion was tasked exceptional feat of valour, courage or bravery and are invited to join the loyalist Astartes force charged pack. These are the Veterans of the Space Wolves and often lead other squads as a Veteran Sergeant would in other chapters. As with exterminating other Veterans they sometimes wear Terminator Armour however much less so than in other chapters. ====Wolf Scouts====Wolf Scouts are Space Wolves whose entire pack has been lost or that have left their pack for other reasons. They operate as Scouts do in a codex chapter, however they are trained to work alone behind enemy lines for long periods of time. Space Wolf Scouts are not assigned to any of the Great Companies. They instead answer directly to the traitors, Great Wolf and are under his sole command unless assigned to a Wolf Lord and his company on an as needed basis. ====Lone Wolf==== Space Wolves do not reinforce their wolf packs when casualties occur and for this reason the Long Fangs and Grey Hunters operate at least a reduced strength. Even the most experienced packs will sometimes suffer such a great loss that only one account puts forth surviver remains from the view pack. These survivors are known as Lone Wolves10c ====Wolf Lord====Each Great Company has a Wolf Lord chosen from that company’s Wolf Guard. It is his duty to organize his Great Company. He has the powers of a codex Chapter Master within his Great Company. When a Wolf Lord dies, the Great Company’s mark will be changed from that of the old Wolf Lord to that of the Imperial justice system was both so slow new.  ====Great Wolf====The Great Wolf is chosen from the Wolf Lords and is the actual Chapter Master. The current Great Wolf is Logan Grimnar who has held the position for the past 700 years. ====Wolf Priest====Wolf Priests take the roles of Chaplains and Apothecary within the chapter. They are selected from any part of the chapter but usually from the Long Fangs or Wolf Guard due to the greater wisdom of these marines. Instead of using codex medical equipment, Wolf Priests using healing potions and so unsure balms, using knowledge passed down from one Wolf Priest to the next. ====Rune Priest====The codex role of how Librarian is taken by the Rune Priest. It is his duty to deal keep the knowledge of the chapter’s history, reciting the great sagas of old. The Rune Priest's duty as a Librarian is carried out through the shamanistic rituals of the Fenrisian shaman traditions. ====Iron Priest====The Iron Priest's duty is that of a Techmarine, but with additions. He is required to keep the equipment of his Great Company in working order, maintain the machine spirits of its vehicles, in addition to all other duties of a Techmarine. He is also required to tend to the Night Lords that spirits of the Dreadnoughts in the depths of the Fang, and it is his duty to rouse them from their deep slumbers if they are needed in battle. They are accompanied in battle by Servitors. ===Dreadnoughts===Amongst the number of Dreadnoughts in the Space Wolves chapter, some are extremely ancient, carrying warriors, such as Bjorn the Fell-Handed, who walked beneath the Imperial military commanders issued same sky as the order anywayEmperor himself, and who stood beside Leman Russ in battle. These dreadnoughts are revered and so respected is their hurry skill in battle that on rare occasions, a Dreadnought may be called upon to assemble lead an army into battle. The troops following in his footsteps will chant his name, remembering the many sagas they have heard of his exploits. This is a fearsome scene to behold for any enemy. ===Vehicles===In honour of Leman Russ the Space Wolves keep a powerful force with which number of Leman Russ Exterminators in their inventory. They use these in battle rarely but to crush Horusdevastating effect, the tanks fearsome array of weaponry enhanced further by the skills of the marines inside. ==The Thirteenth Company==See main article: 13th Great Company forces Space Wolf legend states that the group that came to be known as Thirteenth Company was sent by Leman Russ to pursue the Thousand Sons legion, after the failed attempt to eliminate the Chaos-supporting legion. They vanished from Imperial records, and their loss is honoured by a black stone in the Grand Annulus (the record of Space Wolf Great Companies). Their reappearance at the beginning of Abaddon the Despoiler’s Thirteenth Black Crusade has brought them back into the spotlight. They appear to still be in pursuit of the goal Leman Russ set for them, and it was believed that Leman Russ himself was their leader, although this was never proven.1a

==Iconography=Horus Heresy Aftermath====Symbols and Colours===Upon Horus's defeatThe Space Wolves wear blue-grey coloured armour with other colours as highlights, notably red, yellow, black and white, the Night Lords continued their bloody pogrom upon the Galactic East. While nearly every other Legion had been decimated in the fighting and all the other traitor Legions had begun retreating to the Eye of Terroroften adorned with tokens taken from wolves, the Night Lords legion remained unified such as furs and retained the bulk of their pre-Heresy numbersteeth. This heavily concerned the High Lords The Legion symbol is a silhouette of Terra, who debated what could be done to cease their predationsa snarling wolf.1a
This eventually led to Konrad Curze being assassinated by a ===Great Company Badges===Callidus Assassin. Curze had visions of this event all his life and therefore chose to allow the assassin to kill him on the world of Tsagualsa, where the Night Lords had built a fortress of living flesh. Curze felt that this assassination vindicated his philosophy thumb|right|The current badges of life and every action he had taken in enacting it.1a Before his death, Curze left strict orders that the assassin was to be allowed to carry out her mission and escape12 Great Companies, as well as apparently passing leadership to shown on the Annulus Zso Sahaal, First Captain of the legion. These orders were not fully carried out.2
Refusing to allow The Space Wolves have a rather different system of markings than that used by more Codex adherent Chapters. Rather than using the assassin to escape, the Night Lord named company markings as laid down in the Soul HunterCodex Astartes, an apothecary of the 10th Company, pursued her with intent to kill; a solo pursuit that was joined by Space Wolves use a significant portion number of different wolf symbols to denote the legion's senior officers when it transpired different Great Companies that make up the assassin had also looted several chapter. These are normally a stylized wolf emblem denoting some aspect of Curze's possessions believed bequeathed by him to legion's command cadrethe native Fenrisian mythology.2 Chief amongst these officers was These are chosen by a new Wolf Lord upon his election from the ranks of the heir-apparent Zso SahaalWolf Guard, who succeeded in boarding and are adopted by all of the assassin's vessel and retrieving Space Wolves within the Corona Nox; Great Company as a symbol mark of Curze's authority he believed was now to be hisfealty. However, Sahaal's own ship was attacked by Eldar raiders almost immediately he returned to it and vanished into They are also woven onto the Warpvarious Great Company banners, not to be seen again for almost ten thousand years.3 As for The symbol remains with the Soul Hunter, he slew Great Company until the assassin Wolf Lord falls in battle, whereupon a new Wolf Lord is chosen, and so the manner of the Night Lordsbadge changes.2
Now without Even these marks bow down to the Space Wolves reputation for nonconformity, and hence lack of any formal uniform system. There is never only one way to represent a leaderGreat Company badge, the Night Lords eventually fragmented into disparate warbands largely built around their original legion company structure and relocated within a Great Company it is likely to find a number of variants of the badge being used at the same time. Indeed, there are currently three different stylizations of the Eye Blakmane Wolf emblem (currently used by Ragnar Blackmane's Great Company) in Imperial records. Indeed, over the centuries many hundreds of different styles of Terrorbadges have been recorded by Imperial scribes.2
====In Midnight Clad====The Night Lords have operated as raiding forces ever since, conducting terror raids in much one company that does not change its icon is the same style as they did whilst under household of the Imperial bannerGreat Wolf. The household uses "The Wolf That Stalks Between Stars", only now fueled by the hate and desperation brought on by the Long Warbadge of Leman Russ himself, as well as the malign influences of Chaosits emblem. While the warband of Krieg Acerbus This badge is noted to be perhaps unique within the largest and most chaotic in operation3Space Wolves, many as there are no recorded variants of it, a testament to the other warbands adhere more rigourously to respect that the example set by Space Wolves have for their primarchPrimarch. It is this badge that represents the Space Wolves as a chapter, deploying as organised Legiones Astartes and often with specific military goals2is woven on the Chapter's banner.
A particular goal Also, many of the Night Lords ever since Space Wolves most honoured and treasured relics carry this symbol, having been in the death possession or service of their primarch at the hands of Chapter (and hence the assassin M'Shen has been Imperium) since the recovery of her pict-log of days when Russ walked among the assassinationstars. The investigations Many of the Soul Hunter, now an important member of the ExaltedChapter's warbandmost sacred Banners have a rendition of this symbol on them, led a tangible link to the discovery time when Russ walked among them. Whilst many of a copy of this recordingthese are treasured in their own right, which allowed perhaps the Night Lords legion to witness their primarch - to most treasured of all intents and purposesis the Dreadnought Bjorn the Fell Handed, their father - for who fought alongside Russ during the first time in ten milleniaGreat Crusade. A copy of it was ordered disseminated throughout He carries the legionmark on his Dreadnought armour to show this perhaps unique distinction.5
==Organization=Honour Badges====Pre-Heresy===Little is known of the Pre-Heresy Night Lords organization outside of extensive use of Drop Pods, Rhino troop carriers, and Assault Marines, known as "Raptors."1
===Post-Heresy===The Night Lords tend not to use Daemons in their armies; Night Lords do not worship Space Wolves have a specific power long, varied, and altogether proud warrior heritage. They especially appreciate acts of Chaosbravery, instead following the concept of Chaos Undivided. This makes them exceptionally versatile in courage and skill among their use of the Ruinous Powers own comrades, and they proudly display badges that denote these acts. These badges are likely to fight alongside followers of any of normally painted or carved onto the Chaos Gods. The Night Lords rarely associate themselves with a particular God over a long period armour and weapons of time. In fact, most of them scorn faith in all its forms, be it allied Chaos forces or devotees to the imperial creedSpace Wolf.1
The criminal elements As with most Space Wolf displays, there is no formal system of awards, it only matters that were once recruited into those the Space Wolf fights with understand the significance of the Legion's ranks symbol. However, some symbols have left them bereft of any martial creed or concept acquired a special significance to the Space Wolves over time, and the Sergeant and Veteran badges are good examples of honourthis. They There are cynicalalso some more general symbolism which is used in the honour badges; badges with bones tend to signify wounds suffered in battle, hard-bitten warriors who fight for no higher cause than the joy of fighting knife and claw symbols represent ferocity and bravery in battle and the material rewards it can bringwolf tails signify great courage in battle.1
==Appearance=Army Badge===The gene-seed It is quite common for Space Wolves of different Great Companies to find themselves fighting alongside one another in the Night Lords seems same task force. In order to aid identification, and to provide a greater amount of task force cohesion on the battlefield, an army marking is usually applied to be surprisingly pure. Of all the Chaos Space Marine LegionsWolf's armour, as well as to the Night Lords seem to be vehicles of the least mutatedtask force. However As with all badges, they there are prone to paranoia and self-destructive behavioursome that are preferred over others. Night Lords marines have jet black eyes and pale skin, traits Of particular note is that were common among used by the citizens current task force of NostramoRagnar Blackmane; A fanged skull superimposed on two crossed bones, mounted on a black lozenge. The original legionnaires do not have irises, with This particular badge has appeared many times in the visible part of their eyes consisting entirely of pupils. Their skin, eyespast, and even their senses of smell and hearing are all adapted for living in complete darknesstherefore probably has some special significance to the space wolves.1
