His first appearance was in Ian Watson's Space Marine and Harlequin (published in the early 1990's). While certain elements of these novels are no longer considered to be part of the current 40k cannon (such as Zoats and Squats)4, other elements (Imperial Fists' tradition of Honour Duels, self punishment, the Phalanx and characters such as Vladimir Pugh) were first established here and continue as part of the "current" 40K universe.5
To complicate matters further, Harlequin was later republished as part of the Inquisition War Trilogy which was rewritten to expunge non-canon material (Grim the Squat engineer becomes Grill the Tech Priest, for examble). Confusingly however, when the Space Marine novel was republished the but the decision was made not to "ret-con" the material. On this issue, the the publisher stated:"Although the temptation was great to rewrite significant portions of this book to make it conform to current background, as a curiosity piece, an historical snapshot of the Warhammer 40,000 universe circa the early 1990s, this book is invaluable." 4
However, Forge World has included an emblem with the name "Lexandro" as part of its Imperial Fists brass etch, a nod towards including the character in contemporary canon.6
