Horus Aximand was a captain of the Luna Wolves legion and member of the elite Mournival council. His likeness to Warmaster Horus was so striking that he was affectionately known as Little Horus by his peers. Aximand was heavily involved in warrior lodges that led to the corruption of the Sons of Horus. When Horus was mortally wounded on Davin's Moon, Aximand was one of the lodge members that agreed to allow the Serpent Lodge on Davin to heal Horus of his wound, which in turn lead to Horus's fall to Chaos. Horus Aximand was in the end responsible for the death of his Mournival comrade Tarik Torgaddon.
Horus Aximand was last seen at the drop site massacre on Isstvan V, fighting alongside the Son's of Horus, accompanying Abaddon. It was clear that a change had overcome Aximand as his movements were described as being mechanical and his features devoid of emotion. Aximand's reluctance to kill his Mournival brothers on Isstvan III could be seen as the catalyst for the change. Despite Aximand's allegiances to the Warmaster, he is always described as a wise and rational Astartes. While ultimately he is tied to his Primarch's cause, much of his personality has been buried. In the short story "Little Horus" by Dan Abnett we see more of Horus Aximand, this time as the traitor Sons of Horus assault the loyalist world Dwell. Aximand is shown to me having disturbing dreams of familiar situations where an unknown presence lurks out of sight. Aximand approaches Ezekyle Abaddon with the idea of filling the two Mournival posts once occupied by the slain loyalists Tarik Torgaddon and Garviel Loken. Abaddon suggests first Serghar Targost, but Aximand argues he is too busy with his duties as lodge master. Next Abaddon suggests Falkus Kibre. Aximand hesitates, as Kibre is part of Abaddon's company and the whole idea of the Mournival is to offer balanced advice to the Warmaster. Seeing this, Abaddon suggests Kalus Ekaddon, but Horus Aximand has the same objection to him as he did Kibre. Annoyed, Abaddon asks Aximand to make a few suggestions. His first is Tybalt Marr, but Abaddon doubts he has the stomach for the job. Aximand then suggests Jerrod, Luc Sedirae's replacement as captain of the thirteenth captain, but Abaddon argues he has his hands full taking over captaincy. It is then that Aximand suggests Grael Noctua, a Sergeant. Abaddon needs only a little persuading and then uses Aximand's getting Noctua into the Mournival to push his own candidate, Falkus Kibre. It is agreed that Kibre and Noctua will fill the vacancies in the Mournival. The Sons of Horus attack Dwell and Aximand instates Grael Noctua as one of his command staff in preperation for his induction into the Mournival. The traitors butcher the loyalist defenders, mere human forces from the system, but are caught by surprise by loyalist Space Marines who have secretly fortified the system, part of the ragtag forces of Shadrak Meduson, Iron Hands Tenth Captain who arrived at Isstvan too late and has put together a motley loyalist army of Iron Hands, White Scars, Salamanders who escaped Isstvan and human loyalist forces. Horus Aximand slays Bion Henricos, Shadrak Meduson's second in command, but is attacked by a White Scars kill-formation disguised as statues led by Hibou Khan, Meduson's co-leader of the ragtag force. Reinforcements arrive and Hibou Khan and the White Scars are driven off, but one of them slices off Aximand's face. The medicae of the Sons of Horus reattach Horus Aximand's face, the muscle grafting making him look more brutal and somehow more like Horus, not less. Lying unconscious in the medicae ward the lurking figure in Aximand's dreams is revealed as Garviel Loken, but Aximand is happy about this as Loken is dead and the dead pose him no threat.
