The 597th Regiment of the Valhallan Ice Warriors was formed in 931.M41, and is celebrated as being the home unit for many years of Commissar Ciaphas Cain.

Origins
[[Image:Valhallan 597th.JPG|thumbnail|right|The 597th Valhallan regimentbegan as the amalgamation of the survivors of two distinct regiments, the 301st and the 296th regiments, led by both of which had suffered over fifty percent losses after fighting against CommissarTyranids on Ciaphas CainCorania. Although it was standard practice for the Departmento MunitorumOriginally founded on Valhalla as two distinct regiments (to group surviving elements into a new regiment before sending them reinforcements, the initial differences between the 301st and the 296th)were almost guaranteed to cause friction, so much that the Valhallan 597th combination was founded from the surviving units of those two regiments after each sustained serious losses during speculated to have been a protracted planetary defense assignmentclerical error, or simply bureaucratic stupidity. The 301st were specialised planetary assault shock troops, while the 296th were rear echelon, HQ security units and one of Valhalla's few all -female regiments. Both units had been all but annihilated when To make matters worse, Regina Kasteen, the 296th's senior officer, was promoted to the new unit's colonelcy by virtue of a mere three days' seniority over her opposite number in the 301st, TyranidsMajor had arrived on Broklaw, who became her executive officer. Combined with a lost sense of identity, the unification of the regiment did not go smoothly until the arrival of Commissar Cain, which coincided with a riot breaking out in the mess hall that left several troopers and naval provosts dead.
Due Cain's approach was to combat losses both regiments suffered, force the men and women of the Departmento Munitorum decided two former units to group integrate. On his order, the two regiments men and women were formed into one before sending mixed squads and fire teams, forcing them additional reinforcements; to train together and depend on each other. He instituted generous incentives for the new teams that performed best during exercises, which remained a common practice in proud tradition of the Imperial Guard regiment for years afterwards (for instance, the Tanith 1st was similarly composed of extra ale ration for the surviving elements of several regimentsbest performing squad came to be known as "Cain's round").
UnfortunatelyWith the agreement of the Departmento Munitorum, likely due to a clerical errorCain proposed that the new regiment's designation be the 597th (301 + 296), allowing the combination neglected troopers to feel that the two regiments their old regimental traditions and identities were of different gendersnot being erased, merely redefined. Combined with a lost sense of identity, the unification of the regiment did not go smoothly until the introduction of Commissar Ciaphas Cain This compromise was accepted by most.
Cain's approach to the issue was to combine squads and fire teams using elements of both the men and women. During a riot in the mess hall on Founding Day (a regimental holiday based on the day The fragile morale of the new regiment's birth), was also boosted when Cain managed to subdue most of the regiment through sheer force of will. Faced interceded with political pressure from the captain of the transport troop ship to punish those responsible, Cain managed to avoid damaging regimental morale by reducing on behalf of the penalities for most five troopers found guilty of the soldiers involved in committing murder during the riot. This left them with five who were blamed with the death Instead of naval ratingsexecution, of which Cain assigned them to the next suicide mission, unless the opportunity to hand them ordered that they be held until they could be transferred to a Penal Legion arose first, or, failing that, a particularly dangerous mission.
