Purgatory was a minor Imperial world garrisoned by a small force of [[Cadian Shock TroopsTroopers]].{{Fn|1b}} The planet was attacked by a warband of [[Night Lords]] Chaos Space Marines, who massacred the planet's defence forces. A later investigation by the [[Ultramarines]] and the [[Ordo Malleus]] of the [[Inquisition]] revealed that the Night Lords targeted the planet to locate a warp-created artefact known as the Hand of Night.{{Fn|1b}}{{Fn|1c}}{{Fn|1d}}
