The Orpheus Sector is an Imperial Sector of Segmentum Tempestus.

History
In 570.M30 in the latter part of the Great Crusade, legend has it that the Rogue Trader Arica Orpheus conducted ranging expeditions into the vast expanse known as the Mandragoran Stars on the outermost borders of what will become Segmentum Tempestus. Known as a dangerous uncharted region which mostly can not sustain life, records of the regions in the great libraries of Terra make reference to sinister pre-human ruins and monuments on Dead Worlds. This reputation combined with the difficulty in navigating near the Veiled Region made Lady Arica Orpheus' expedition hazardous.1a

During the Horus Heresy, the savage civil war saw the regions of the sector under control torn apart by lawlessness and anarchy. Neither the forces of the Emperor or Horus controlled the region. During the bloodshed of the Scouring, the Alpha Legion warlord Dynat Mal fled to the Sector's Mandragoran Stars. Dynat's forces, known as the Shadowed Ones, employed guerrilla tactics and dark forces to take over much of the region. This sundered realm eventually became known as the Dark Marches1a

In 610.M36, the Imperium launched the Dark Marches Crusade with the intent of reclaiming the region in the name of the Emperor. After a century and a half of fighting, the Crusade ends with Imperial victory and the Orpheus Sector is officially founded by its first Governor, Hal Orpheus. By 113.M38 however the Sector becomes plagued by uprisings and Cultist activity as the Sector's military resources are drained int he face of campaigns mandated by Segmentum Command. To make matters worse the Chaos Lord Von Mallas launches his Black Crusade, and fighting reaches the Orpheus Sector. Much of the sector's commerce and resources are destroyed over the course of the war.1a

Another tragedy hit the sector in 715.M38 with the rising of the Cult Celestarii, which is never stamped out despite the best efforts of the Adeptus Arbites and Ordo Hereticus. In 899.M38, a mysterious event occurs as the world of Tlaloc is destroyed by an unknown foe over the course of a matter of hours, though the Ordo Xenos maintains Dark Eldar to be the culprits. Faced with countless wars, economic mismanagement, and tragedies, the Orpheus Sector erupts into a Full Scale Revolt. Following years of bloody fighting, the Sector finally enjoys a period of renewed stability and relative prosperity.1a

However the Sector saw a new upheaval in 819.M41 on the Industrial World of Chemarium II when the Chaos Lord Ranker Nonesuch spreads destruction and terror. In the ensuing guerrilla war. Inquisitorial Stormtroopers are dispatched to aid the suppression campaign.1a

In 990.M41, the violent Warp turbulence that had been plaguing the western Orpheus Sector is suddenly extinguished, causing celestial instability across the region. All across the sector, Asropaths and Psykers are subjected to unexpected deaths and mass hysteria breaks out. The Ordo Malleus begins to believe that the events are precursor to some major Daemonic incursion into the region. At the same time, the Adeptus Mechanicus reports that binary stars of the Sector's Caracol System were unexpectedly destroyed by supernova. However, this report is ignored by Imperial authorities as insignificant.1a

Invasion
*Fall of Orpheus
In 3716691.M41, a sudden and utterly unexpected invasion swept across dozens of worlds across the sector. This was the beginning of a massive Necron invasion by the Maynarkh Dynasty. After a bitter campaign, the Orphean War reached an untenable stalemate that saw Imperial forces besieged and cut off but nonetheless holding portions of the sector. Necron forces became bogged down against the unexpected arrival of Chaos warbands, and the Imperium estimates that the Sector can not be saved without a large Crusade that could only be launched within thirty to fifty years minimum.1b
