Purgatory was a minor Imperial world garrisoned by a small force of [[Cadian Shock Troopers]].{{Fn|1b}} The planet was attacked by a warband [[Chaos Warband|Warband]] of [[Night Lords]] [[Chaos Space Marines]], who massacred the planet's defence defense forcesand enslaved the remaining population; later leaving the planet with their ships' holds filled with slaves{{Fn|3}}. A later investigation by the [[Ultramarines]] and the [[Ordo Malleus]] of the [[Inquisition]] revealed that the Night Lords targeted the planet , in order to locate a warp[[Warp]]-created artefact known as the [[Hand of Night]].{{Fn|1b}}{{Fn|1c}}{{Fn|1d}}
