'''Purgatory''' is an [[Imperium|Imperial]] [[Research Station|research station]], located in the [[Gothic Sector]] of [[Segmentum Obscurus]]. During the [[12th Black Crusade]], the planet was attacked by the [[Night Lords]] in order to retrieve an ancient artefact for [[Ezekyle Abaddon]].

 Located in the [[Gothic Sector]] of [[Segmentum Obscurus]],{{Fn|4}} Purgatory was a minor Imperial research station, garrisoned by a small force of [[Cadian Shock Troopers]].{{Fn|1b}} The planet's geography consisted of thick forests and rugged mountain ranges, and its defences were centred centered on the Skyguard Fortress.{{Fn|5}}

As a prelude to the [[12th Black Crusade]],{{Fn|5}} the planet was attacked by a [[Chaos Warband|warband]] of [[Night Lords]] [[Chaos Space Marines]], who massacred the planet's defence forces and enslaved the remaining population; later , leaving the planet with their ships' holds filled with slaves.{{Fn|3}} A later investigation by the [[Ultramarines]] and the [[Ordo Malleus]] of the [[Inquisition]], led by inquisitor Inquisitor [[Horst]],{{Fn|4}} revealed that the Night Lords targeted the planet in order to locate a [[Warp]]-created artefact known as the Hand of Night,{{Fn|1b}}{{Fn|1c}}{{Fn|1d}} or the [[Hand of Darkness]]. This device was an ancient weapon of considerable power, later used by [[Ezekyle Abaddon]] to access the [[Blackstone Fortress]]es during his attacks throughout the Gothic Sector.{{Fn|4}}
