The Adeptus Mechanicus controls a great deal of manufacturing and development resources in the Imperium. While the Adeptus Mechanicus is a part of the Imperium, it has developed separately and enjoys a considerable degree of independence. Most significantly, the Adeptus Mechanicus follow a different religion from the Imperial cult and its derivatives.
On Mars many warring factions vied for power, and a brutal war was waged using arcane and unimaginably destructive weaponry. The carefully constructed atmosphere was burned away, and once more the surface was exposed to the deadly radiations of the Sun. The terraformed environment, which had teemed with life, was rendered barren again. The combatants now fought in the same red hued wastelands that the first colonists had found. Much of the population retreated underground, as any who were not equipped with a radiation suit could not long survive on the surface.
Beliefs
Religion
Cult MechanicusThe Cult of the Machine teaches that mechanical devices, in their perfection of function, are a higher form of being than evolutionary organisms. For this reason, adherents of the Cult often undergo extensive bionic and cybernetic augmentation throughout their lives. It is widely believed that this process produces an effect on the psyche parallel to the physical, and the thought processes and emotions of the subject become increasingly machine like.
The Cult Mechanicus await the arrival of the Omnissiah, a prophesised physical avatar of the Machine God. During the Great Crusade the forces of the Emperor liberated many of the forge worlds founded as colonies of Mars in ancient times. On his arrival at many of the worlds, the Cult Mechanicus recognised the Emperor as the long awaited Omnissiah, however with his ascension of the Golden Throne at the dawn of the Imperial Age this belief was largely discredited.
===The Quest for KnowledgePhilosophy===The belief system, there are four philosophical viewpoints that divide members in interpreting these tennants. ;Puritans*Anti-Xenos - These members of the Adeptus Mechanicus believe that Alien Technology is driven by an extreme form of heresy against the quest for knowledge Machine God and devotes itself needs to research be destroyed at all costs. *Imperio-Cognisticians- These members of the Adeptus Mechanicus believes that everything is part of a giant computer, called the "Divine Processing Routine", and explorationthat biology is really just a type of machine. The primary aim They believe that its their job to "upgrade" the "computer".*Organicists - These members of its the Adeptus Mechanicus believe deeply in mechanicus and their purity but spend their time researching biology. While this is strange to many exploratory missions of the Mechanicus, they are essential in aiding the study of living organisms and the preservation of human life. ;Radicals*Khamrians - These members of the Adeptus Mechanicus believe in researching Artificial Intelligence to benefit the Imperium. This belief, pushed by ex-Magos Degio Khamrios, is similar to the recovery creation of STCRobots technologyin the Dark Age of Technology and is feared by many members of the Mechanicus. The *Omnissiads - These members of the Adeptus Mechanicus has gathered information about believes that the STCMachine God could be given a physical form, of which there biological or mechanial. They are no known surviving systems, for thousands of yearsrelated to the Inquisition's Thorians and Horousians. Any rumour *Pro-Xenos - These members of the Adeptus Mechanicus believe that Alien technology is a functional system is followed up similar but corrupted form of technology as human technology and investigatedcan lead to insights necessary for understanding the Machine God.
Organisation
Techpriests
Techpriest
Any member of the Cult Mechanicus over the rank of menial will often be referred to as a techpriest, though Magi and higher ranks are usually referred to by rank. Techpriests can usually be recognised by their clothing, which unless their work requires otherwise will usually be robes of rust-red or black coloration. The amount of augmentation found in a techpriest is highly dependent on rank within the Cult; a novice may have only one or two augmetic systems, if any, while very senior members may have only a few biological organs left in their bodies at all. Common augmentations include:
Hierarchy
TechpriestThe universal term for an Adept of the Adeptus Mechanicus is Techpriest. This name covers all manner of Adepts, from Electro-priests to Enginseers, but does not usually cover the higher ranks of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
