===Modern history===
In 744.[[M41]], the Silent King ended his self-imposed exile and returned to the galaxy after encounter with the Tyranids within the intergalactic void. He discovered the Tyranids were just one of many threats facing the Necrons. Other alien races had swarmed over their [[Tomb World]]s and the [[Warp]] now seeped across the Galaxy.{{Fn|4}} He has begun a journey across the galaxy with a band of his loyal [[Triarch Praetorian]]s to reawaken [[Tomb World]]s that still slumber so they may unite against the Tyranids.{{Fn|1c}} The returned Silent King is careful to not reveal his true identity, even to fellow Necrons. He works primarily through [[Triarch Praetorian]]s or unwitting [[Cryptek]]s and [[Necron Overlord]]s to achieve his goal, and has steadily influenced the galaxy from one side to the other. Slowly, he has pursued his his great work from the shadows.{{Fn|3}} He intends to unite the Necrons against the Tyranids while also manipulating the younger races to his own schemes.{{Fn|4}}
When the Silent King returned, he did so with a new Triarch, with [[Hapthatra|Hapthatra the Radiant]] and [[Mesophet|Mesophet the Shadowed Hand]] by his side atop the [[Dias of Dominion]].{{Fn|6}} Additionally, he carries with him a bound C'tan known as the Enchained. {{Fn|7}}
In 995.[[M41]], the [[Blood Angels]] [[Space Marine Chapter]] engaged a Necron army under the Silent King. In what became known as the [[Gehenna Campaign]], when [[Tyranid]]s appeared over Gehenna the Blood Angels and Necrons of the Silent King were forced to join forces to defeat their common foe.{{Fn|2}}
