The initial Guard landings were poised to assault Nero Hive. However, during the operation, a psychic storm erupted over the hive which destroyed or disabled a number of troop-ships and prevented further Guard from reinforcing the first wave. A detachment of the Tanith First and Only led by Colonel Corbec managed to find the source of the storm while making their way through the western part of Nero - a daemon. After successfully retreating from the creature, Corbec gave coordinates for the Navarre to initiate an orbital bombardment, levelling the entire block, destroying the daemon and ending the storm.1a
Once the Imperials had secured Caligula, they stationed a number of Guard regiments there to hunt down any surviving cells of Chaos Cultists and support the rebuilding process. General Thoth placed Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt of the Tanith First in charge of coordinating civilian relief convoys transporting supplies from Aurelian Hive. At the time, bandit attacks on the convoys were common, but the bandits were too hard to track down and exterminate directly. Once Comms Officer Raglon examined the hive's vox traffic, however, it became clear that someone on the convoys was in league with the bandits, feeding them the convoys' positions. Gaunt decided to lure the bandits out of hiding by using a convoy from Aurelian to Hive Calphernia as bait, placing Trooper Bragg in charge. Sure enough, one of the drivers called in the bandits to raid, thinking Bragg was a simple-minded fool whose forces could be dealth with easily, exposing them to a counterattack by Marauder Bombers of the Imperial Navy.1b
Geography
Caligula's surface was largely barren pumice rock punctuated by a variety of depressions including old craters and extinct calderas, some of which were large enough to support microclimates with thriving ecosystems. Caligula's settlements, including the planet's capital hive city of Nero, were also built in these depressions.1a
The surface of the planet between these settlements and inhabited areas is known as the "deadlands". Many Imperial citizens fleeing the war escaped to the deadlands and became bandits, preying upon supply convoys.1b
