The Order of the Jackal was one of the three Red Orders of the Thousand Sons Legion during the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy.1
Overview
Known as the Measure of Life and Death, the role of this order was twofold: to remember the dead and to raise the next generation of warriors to fight for the Legion. It was the Order of the Jackal that interred approved wounded Thousand Sons into Dreadnoughts and trained Aspirants and Neophytes into new Space Marines as well as managing Gene-Seed. The Order also attended to the dead of the Legion and maintained their legacy. As a result, the Order contained a large number of Apothecaries.1
The Order became known as the protectors of the Legion's traditions and were often used as arbiters in internal disputes. Their members within each of the five Cults of the Thousand Sons were known as the Khenetai Occult. The Khenetai Occult frequently served as the guardians of each Cult's temple and to symbolize this they often wore a ceremonial jackal-masked helm marked with the symbol of both their order and their cult respectively.1

Trivia
The Order of the Jackal strongly resembles the embalmers of ancient Egypt, an order of priests and artisans who oversaw the process of mummification of high-ranking nobles and also wore jackal-shaped helms in the likeness of Anubis.
