A Spinefist is a Tyranid bio-weapon.
The Spinefist is a symbiote armed with a set of lethally poisonous spikes. The Spinefist is attached to the host-creature's arm, with a long larynx coiled around to the main body of the host where it connects to the respiratory system. The weapon's firing is powered by large heavily muscled breathing bladders within the host's body. The contraction of these bladders propels the spines.
In 3rd and 4th Edition Spinefists are ranged weapons, often carried by gaunt species. They launch a wave of spines with neuro-toxins spread along them which can puncture armour and assault the nervous system of the receiver.1-p30
In 2nd Edition Spinefists were carried by Tyranid Warriors and Hive Tyrants as close combat support weapons. It was in fact a symbiotic weapon, a separate creature which wrapped itself around the arm of the user with its tail joining into the user's airways. The weapon is fired by a sharp inhalation exhalation and the sudden increase of air pressure causes a salvo of deadly projectiles covered in toxins to explode outwards.2-p53
