Forbidden Cities are ancient underground military tunnels and bunkers on the planet Necromunda, previously abandoned, which became profitable trading places due to the harvesting of the drug Ghast drug.1
Overview
The military tunnels beneath Necromunda, cut into the planet's bedrock, were designed for rapid troop movement during invasions. These tunnels, accessed through guarded ramp-shafts but also penetrable via heat sinks and air vents, connect to large storage depots and bunkers stocked with synthetic food and raw materials. Over time, many tunnels fell into disuse and were forgotten.1
However, these ancient bunkers, known as the "Forbidden Cities," were rediscovered as the exclusive source of the drug ghast. Most Necromundans consider these cities mythical, but they are real, secret hubs where decayed corpse-starch deposits are processed into ghast. The nobility of Necromunda controls the ghast production and trade, utilizing subordinate clans, techs, and paramilitary forces.1
The wealth generated from ghast has transformed these bunkers into opulent palaces. The workforce, often slaves from the underhives or captives bought from nomad slavers, is overseen by brutal gangs. The lucrative ghast trade sustains the luxurious lifestyles of the involved noble families, including exiled members of noble households who manage operations in these hidden bunkers.1
