The Fragment of Typhus is a piece of the Death Guard Typhus the Traveller's power armor, which he gifted to the Human population of Maypax.2
History
This was after the Herald of Nurgle visited the world and its population began worshiping him as a god. Typhus later left Maypax after he had corrupted it, but he gave the now heretical population a fragment of his power armor before doing so. The Fragment of Typhus contained a portion of the Herald and the Chaos God Nurgle's power and was placed in the Temple of Typhus, that had been built to honor the Traveller. However soon afterwards, Warp Storms appeared and cut off Maypax from the Galaxy for centuries. When the Warp Storms finally cleared, the Adeptus Mechanicus discovered the Fragment's existence and sought to claim the powerful artefact for themselves, before it fell into unwise hands. The first Explorator team it sent to Maypax, though, fell prey to the dangers the world now held, which included the Orks. Another Explorator team was then sent, but Mechanicus agent Jamona Hilt was charged with acting as a backup plan, in case the team failed as well. This led the Mechanicus to insert him into the expendable Catachan 19'ers Platoon, whose Regiment was among the Astra Militarum forces now fighting the Orks on Maypax.2
When Hilt later learned that the second Explorator team had been killed, before retrieving the Fragment,1 he began putting his plans into action.2 The Adeptus Mechanicus agent then led the 19'ers' Captain, Obdant, to the Explorators, where a dying member of the team asked him to find the temple and the artefact it contained. After the Explorator died,1 Hilt began manipulating Obdant into raiding the temple, so that he could claim the Fragment for the Mechanicus, by telling the Captain2 how valuable the artefact could be. The possible wealth they could obtain, convinced Obdant to undertake the risk and he took Hilt and a small number of the 19'ers to find the artefact.1 With their help, Hilt reached the Fragment of Typhus and then turned on his former comrades. The Mechanicus agent was then going to shoot them, after explaining the origins of the Fragment and himself, when the 19'ers member Moom attacked Hilt. The Ogryn knocked Hilt unconscious, but in doing so the Mechanicus agent hit the pillar the Fragment of Typhus was floating on. This caused the temple to begin to collapse and as the 19'ers made their escape, Obdant ordered that Hilt and the Fragment be taken as well, as he thought they could be useful.2
However once they fled from the temple, the 19'ers found themselves facing a horde of Orks, who had been waiting near its entrance.4 Before they could be killed, though, a Valkyrie suddenly appeared above them and deployed a force of Serica Twenty-Seventh Guardsmen. They were led by Captain Crowvek, who told Obdant they had been ordered to defend the 19'ers and the Fragment of Typhus they carried. Working together, the Catachans, Hilt and the Serica manage to defeated the Orks. Afterwards, though, the Adeptus Mechanicus agent ordered Crowvek to execute Obdant and the other 19'ers for treachery against the Imperium and for disobeying the orders of a superior officer. Crowvek refused to do so, as that was not among the orders the Serica had been given, but the matter was dealt with when Moom attacked Hilt again. The Serica then left aboard the Valkyrie with an unconsciousness Hilt and the Fragment, which they would deliver to the Adeptus Mechanicus on Mars.3
