During the [[Great Sleep]] the Silent King was on a self-imposed exile into the void between galaxies while the majority of the Necron race was still in hibernation. However at least 10,000 years before the [[41st Millennium]] a number of Necrons had prematurely awoken. To prevent chaos until such a time the Silent King could be found, the Necrons operated the [[Awakened Council]] to settle inter-dynastic disputes.{{Fn|17a}}
The rank-and-file automatons of the Necrons have programming which prevents them from firing on one another. This protocol can only be overridden by a [[Necron Overlord|Overlord]] or [[Necron Lord|Lord]] of their affiliated dynasty.{{Fn|17g}}
