The Black Sun was a Warp anomaly that plagued the world of Sarastus on a regular cycle of thirteen years. It appeared as a black star shining poisonous light. It hadn't started forming until the world had fallen away from Imperial attention - an event that would be taken advantage of by the Night Lords warband the Prophets of True Night as a recruiting event. This bloody festival would become known as True Night.
Yehzod, the Sorcerer of the Prophets of True Night, would become obsessed with the anomaly, seeking to study and understand it. His influence would be the deciding factor in the Prophets' returning to Sarastus for recruitment, despite the Chaos Lord Vassaago becoming disillusioned with the diminishing returns of Sarastus as a recruiting world.
Yehzod would create an artifact called The Needle to serve as a custodian and an aid to study the Black Sun, but which also became an important object during True Night. Despite Yehzod's efforts to control the object, the Needle would eventually become more autonomous, becoming self-serving and aligned toward the Black Sun.1
Trivia
The Black Sun is a very similar event to the Tyrant Star of the Fantasy Flight Games continuity.2 However, the Black Sun is a localized event that occurs on a regular cycle, as opposed to the nomadic and randomized nature of the Tyrant Star.
