Ratlings are the smallest type of abhuman, their ancestors having become stunted by thousands of years of inbreeding on worlds with naturally soporific climates and abundant harvests.{{Fn|4}}
Ratlings rarely reach 1.3 meters in height,{{Fn|4}} being even smaller and slighter than Squats,{{Fn|3}} and though their lack of dietary restrictions tend to make them husky, they are not particularly strong{{Fn|4}} or resilient.{{Fn|3}} They are idle, hedonistic, loud, gregarious, over-friendly and sexually promiscuous. Their lives are spent eating until sick, drinking copious amounts of intoxicating liquids, and procreating uncontrollably.{{Fn|4}} Their proclivities towards food exemplifies is exemplified in their cuisine, which is well known as phenomenal among the Imperial Guard.{{Fn|1}}
Their short posture and relatively lithe build allows them to move through the undergrowth without making much noise.{{Fn|3}}{{Fn|1}} They have a penchant towards activities of dubious morality and legality, like thievery and fencing contraband. Ratlings are known to "acquire" extra supplies within their stationed regiments and trading these resources to other soldiers.{{Fn|1}}
Other ways that Ratlings differ from baseline human physiology is that the forehead of their skulls are denser,{{Fn|24a}} as well as their toenails being as tough as [[grox]] horns. An imaginative Ratling could use a bitten off toenail as an impromptu tool when cutting and splicing the wires of electronics.{{Fn|24b}}

===Homeworlds===
Ratling homeworlds are self-sufficient, agricultural [[Feudal World|Feudal Worlds]],{{Fn|4}} which, like worlds populated by baseline humans, are subject to the tithe of soldiers for the Imperial Guard.{{Fn|1}}
