Luther and his forces later disobeyed their ordered garrison duty, and left to aid Horus during the Zaramund Campaign. Upon discovering this, the Lion was furious at this unapproved deployment and stripped Luther of his warships upon their return to Caliban. Feeling abandoned on Caliban and dealing with a rebellion by the landless nobility and Chaos agents, Luther, and his forces would slowly turn against their Primarch.13a However the many internal Orders and sects of the Dark Angels made them all but immune to the Warrior Lodges of the now-treacherous Horus and the Word Bearers, allowing them to be immune from the subversion that befall other Legions.50d
The Dark Angels would continue to serve with distinction for the rest of the Great Crusade, even though the scars of the Rangdan Xenocides never truly faded. They would always be the First, envied and admired by all, but by the twilight years of the crusade the X, XIII, XVI and even the XVII legions threatened to surpass them in strength and deed.66a This was in no small part due to the Dark Angels own propensity for discretion when it came to their duty. Never seeking to embellish their own glory, nor receive accolades for their valor.65c66c They would refuse calls to partake in grand campaigns such as the Ullanor Crusade, instead prioritizing their efforts towards which they excelled: Exterminating what horrors were left within the galaxy, and then forever burying their histories through erasing the very memory of their existence from the minds of both mortals and legionaries alike.65c
These unrecorded campaigns the First would wage would include such actions as the Northern Fringe Campaign in 997.M30. Wherein over a 150,000 Dark Angels were marshaled and quietly dispersed across the galactic north to investigate, uproot and exterminate the species of powerful “root-mind” psychic parasites known as the Khrave.66c
