Some apprentice Inquisitors start at the rank of Explicator, where they learn how to extract information using torture under the direction of their mentor Inquisitor. Explicators then move up as more experience is gained in the ways of the Inquisition to the rank of Interrogator.{{Fn|2}}
If an Interrogator's Inquisitor dies, the apprentice can be raised up to the rank of Inquisitor themselves, with the immediate goal of finishing the work of their former master. However, this is considered unconventional by some, and requires a statement and recommendation from another Inquisitor.{{Fn|10}}
