Eldar Spirit Stones, also known as Waystones or Soul Stones61a or mythically as the Tears of Isha112a are small, seemingly precious gem-like stones carried on worn upon an Eldar's chest1a which act as conduits for Eldar Psychic Powers and making Wraithbone2a and which capture the psychic energy of an Eldar's soul at the moment of their death, used to save preventing their souls still-conscious spirit from destruction entering the Warp and being preyed upon by Slaanesh.3a1a Spirit Stones containing the spirits of the dead are interred within the Craftworld's Infinity Circuit.1a
Overview
Spirit Stones are faceted Faceted glassy spheres2a of gem-like polished psycho-receptive stone3a crystals called carrecenad or soul-stone.6 Eldar at large believe they are grown in a way similar to Wraithbone.4 However, it It is a well kept secret even among the Eldar themselves that spirit-stones are actually formed from the psychic energy of the ghosts of eldar who died during the Birth of Slaanesh, their spirits tormented forever by Slaanesh to see the lives they can no longer possess ripped from them and reenacting the fall. As these ghost to reenact their death, after each cycle of which they leave behind soul stones on the Crone Worlds within the Eye of Terror2b which are then disolve once more into the Warp unkess collected to be given to Craftworld eldar at birth.8 At Eldar Mythology, which is the moment living history of the Eldar's deatheldar, tell of the origin of Spirit Stones in the stone acts like ancient past as the "Tears of Isha" which were forged by Vaul such that Kurnous and Isha could speak with the Eldar without Asuryan knowing2a – This is taken today as a 'metaphor for the crystallization of the psychic trap', absorbing their psychic self and preventing it from entering energies within the [[warp]Eye of Terror] and being consumed by associated with the nemesis Fall of the Eldar race: Slaanesh.3a2b
The Waystone can then be brought back to the Eldar's own CraftworldAsuryani will go to incredible lengths to perserve and embedded into its wraithbone core where it will grow into a larger spirit stonerecover Spirit Stones.3a Once In the stone context of a warhost the primary duty of a Spiritseer is implantedto recover Spirit Stone, 5b but beyond it the Eldar'task falls to Rangers soul can travel freely through on the wraithbone, mingling with other Eldar souls and forming part Path of the communal spirit Outcast to do the extremely dangerous task of delving across ancient fields of battle and into the Craftworld Eye of Terror itselfto recover and find new Spirit Stones.3a5c All It is only in this capacity that any relations are kept with the souls within a Craftworld collectively exist inside Chaotic Eldar, such as those in the Infinity CircuitTyrakesh Archeomarketon Arach-Cyn who trade with rangers for collected Spirit Stones.3a11 Once a Quests may be taken by Wraithknights to raid Crone Worlds of their Spirit Stone contains an Eldar soulStones, it can never be used for another9 as famously was the task of the Twelve Outcasts of Alaitoc in 334.M36 – the first since the fall to recover new Spirit Stones. Thus each stone 5a Exodites too wear Spirit Stones, although the providence of such stones is unique to its occupantyet unclear.1b Not all Spirit Stones recovered on Crone Worlds are empty, and even when while some contain the occupying immortal essences of great scholars and heroes of the Eldar Empire more often they contain a malevolent soul is placed into that rages at it's confinement within the Infinity Circuit another can not replace itcrystal.94a
In times A Spirit Stone is a tool in the hands of dire need, an Eldar Seer2a and it is the Spirit Stone which allows a Bonesinger to draw raw energy from the Eldar are also able warp to retrieve shape it into the matter known as Wraithbone.7 Spirit Stones glow brightly in the spirit stones hands of long dead Eldar heroes and place them into Bonesingers, turn blue in the artificial bodies hands of WraithguardFarseers and red or orange when handled by a WraithlordWarlocks.3b72a These constructs are then piloted by Spirit Stones enable a Farseer the Eldar soul, which experiences reality as a dreamfull extent of their psychic abilities (e. This process is considered necromancy in Eldar culture and is only used as a last resort. The Eldar g Eldritch Might who specialize in this process are known as , Illusions, or Vigor).3c6 Spirit Stones are durable but may be crushed, as of Secretsenjoy doing, an Eldar Craftworld with 14 although it may result in a very small population is known for its greater use of these 'living dead'explosion, such as the one which sent Trythos the Space Marine wielding it flying a few metres away.3b13
Spirit Stones containing souls of the dead are enterred into the Wraithbone core of a Craftworld,3a most often the one in which the Aeldari lived in life,2a where they take root and grow into tall trees1a or other structures (such as on Iyanden where the Battle Dead now form bizzare spiraling shapes in the halls where they fell) and their souls enter the Infinity Circuit.3a When Exodites die, their stones are brought beneath the earth into a great barrow where they are broken upon the altar of the World Spirit and laid to rest.1b It is believed beleived by some the Ynnari, the Eldar cult, that when enough Eldar souls have been gathered interred within the Infinity Circuits of that the Craftworlds, a new god will emerge: Ynnead, Eldar God of the Dead. It is hoped by Farseers that this god will be powerful enough emerge to vanquish Slaanesh, freeing the Eldar from their doom. Spirit Stones are also an Eldar vehicle upgrade that allows the spirit to control the vehicle in case the pilots are incapacitated, similar to the Power of the Machine Spirit.133d
One primary source Not all souls are willing to join the infinity circuit5f and they too are used as tools: those containing the souls of spirit stones is powerful Eldar heroes can guide and inform those who wield them,5f retaining the old Eldar homeworldsidentity, personality, now known and memories of the spirit as Crone Worlds. Acquiring new spirit stones is extremely dangerouspsychic energy, 1a as the Crone Worlds exist within well as those containing malevolent spirits recovered from the Eye of Terror. In which are only fit to be embedded into systems such as Eldar MythologyWraithcannon the spirit stones were created by Vaul from the Tears of Isha. This is taken as a metaphor for the crystallization of the psychic energies of the Eyes.64a
Not all Aeldari wear Spirit Stones are what allow , although all Asuryani2a and Exodites1b do. Harlequins choose not to, as their soul is protected by Cegorach,16 simmilarly the BonesingerYnnaris do not wear Spirit Stones of their own, trusting their soul to Ynnead17 – the Reborn do however carry Spirit Stones of the Dead whose power they can potently draw raw energy upon.17 The Drukhari of Commorragh, secreted in the Webway, feed off the pain and misery of other beings to prevent their souls from the warp being slowly and agonisingly leeched by Slaanesh (and those who can afford to shape it into the matter known as do so employ WraithboneHaemonculito revive their souls into new forms on death).716 Eldar Corsairs prize Spirit Stones containing particularly strong spirits are often referred , with even some Drukhari adopting them14b – although not all Corsairs do so as it is equally an act of bravado to as "Tears go without.14c Ancient Aeldari from before the Fall of Isha"the Eldar did not wear Spirit Stones18 possibly because the Warp was not a predatory place for still-sentient Eldar souls yet.113a
Waystones
Waystones are, essentially, large spirit stones.15 Unlike other spirit stones they can be imparted a portion of a still-living Eldar soul allowing other Seers to communicate with and draw upon it.15 Eldrad Ulthran famously did so to his own soul in preparation for the 13th Black Crusade,3d3e which enabled him to guide the myriad strike forces through the webway to coordinate attacks and unleash the full potency of his PsychicEldritch Storm attacks in multiple places at once.15
==Notes==Spirit Stones glow brightly Despite this difference in the hands of Bonesingersstature, turn blue in the hands of Farseers and red or orange when handled by a Warlockterm "waystone" is synonymous with any Spirit Stone.73a
When ===Wraith Constructs===Wraith ConstructIn times of great need Spiritseers5b may separate and Aeldari spirit from the spiritual mass of a Craftworld's Infinity Circuit to place it into a Spirit Stone put aside for this purpose an implant it into an artificial form,1a although the consciousness within is destroyed never fully as individual or alert as a living Aeldari as they exist at once in the real world and the spiritual world of the soul once contained Warp, moving through reality as in a dream where thoughts and feelings are as tangible as bone and steel.1a – this necromancy is lost unpopular, but viewed as a necessity of the dire circumstances many Craftworlds find themselves in.5b These spirits may be implanted in bodies as such as the Wraithguard1a or Wraithlord5b, or in vehicles to serve as pilots should the warp, where it will presumably living pilot be devoured by Slaaneshrendered senseless such as is necessitated within the Hemlock Wraithfighter5d} or as an enhancement to a Grav-Tank.3a5e
Interestingly, in the novel ===Notable Spirit Stones===*Dawn of War (Novel), a Spirit Stone is smashed by a Power Axeof Anath'Lan, resulting in an incredibly loud metallic ringing, and then an explosion that not only destroys the Power Axe, but also sends 5f*Stone, the Space Marine wielding it, flying a few metres away.12Like the *Dark Eldar of present day, ancient Aeldari armour used during the War in HeavenWraithforge Stone doesn't feature these jewels.124b
