Prior to then, there were oblique hints that the Ultramarines were the Snakes' parent [[Space Marine Legion|Legion]], such as:
**An Ultramarines [[Space Marine Captain|Captain]] named [[Saur Damocles]] is mentioned in [[Know No Fear (Novel)|Know No Fear]] by [[Dan Abnett]]; Damocles shares his name with the Iron Snakes' [[Damocles Squad|Notable Squad of the same name]], and the insignia of Damocles' [[Space Marine Company|company]], the 6th, was a white figure-eight serpent, similar to the Iron Snakes' current chapter symbol.{{Fn|4}}
**Whether Captain Damocles is the founding leader of the Squad that bears his name has yet to be confirmed.
