Like [[power armour]], Terminator suits have an outer shell of [[ceramite]]-bonded plates powered by electrically-motivated fibre bundles. Plates of heavy [[plasteel]] further armour the ceramite sections, especially on the front of the suit. This extra armouring provides a level of protection that is far superior to normal Marine armour; not even a [[Missile_launcherMissile launcher#Imperial_Munitions_TypesImperial Munitions Types|Krak missile]] will penetrate the suit's breastplate.{{Fn|7}} It has even been noted to allow its wearer to survive being stood on by a [[Titan]].{{Fn|1}} It also contributes to the immense weight of the suit, making the wearer less maneuverable and slower. External [[adamantium]] ribs help support this weight, while the inclusion of [[suspensor]]s help the suit carry heavier support weapons.{{Fn|3}}

Like power armour, Terminator armour is fully enclosed with life-support functions, and includes an array of sensors including radiation monitors, biological detectors and self-diagnostic [[scanner]]s. Terminator Armour also incorporates many more auxiliary systems than normal Marine power armour, including motion sensors and threat detectors.{{Fn|3}} The armour's sensorium, based upon tendril sensors, links directly into the wearer's own awareness. The sensorium allows the wearer to use a vast number of scanners and detectors without conscious thought. Sensoriums can also be linked together, allowing every squad member to see exactly the same view of the battle as his comrades, though often only the [[Space_Marine_SergeantSpace Marine Sergeant#Terminator_SergeantTerminator Sergeant|Sergeant]]'s suit will broadcast pict-signals.{{Fn|3}}

Some Terminator squads, designated specifically for close-quarter combat, while eschew any ranged weapons in favor favour of either [[Lightning Claw]]s or a combination of [[Thunder Hammer]] and [[Storm Shield]].{{Fn|3}}

However, this proved to be problematic as the [[Great Crusade]] wore on and its [[Expeditionary Fleet]]s outgrew the number of Tech-Wrights the Enclaves could send. Eventually, many fleets were forced to keep their damaged [[Saturnine Terminator Armour]] in storage, until they took on Tech-Wrights or returned to the [[Sol System]]. By the end of the Great Crusade, this limitation had led the Saturnines to be replaced by the more easily available and repairable [[Cataphractii]] and [[Tartaros]] [[Terminator Armour]]sArmours.{{Fn|42c}} Saturnine Armour was already fading into myth by the end of the Great Crusade until the [[Primarch]] [[Vulkan]] sought to recover the design. He was successful, and subsequently handed the revived pattern out to the rest of the Legiones Astartes and wider Mechanicum. Saturnine Armour thus saw use on both sides in the [[Horus Heresy]]{{Fn|29}}, though it first appeared on the battlefield in meaningful numbers in [[Salamanders]] use during the [[Drop Site Massacre]], in use with units such as the [[Pyre Warden]]s.{{Fn|35}}{{Fn|42e}} After witnessing its immense destructive power in Salamanders use on [[Isstvan V]], [[Perturabo]] quickly issued Saturnine Armour into his own ranks en masse. By the time of the [[Siege of Inwit]] there were entire heavy assault companies of the [[Iron Warriors]] equipped with this pattern such as the [[Tekathikos]].{{Fn|37b}} The [[Blood Angels]] soon followed suit, as seen with units such as the [[Colossi]].{{Fn|38}} Other Saturnine formations included the [[Helwrought]] of the [[Iron Hands]], [[Phraetus Anointed]] of the [[Word Bearers]],{{Fn|42f}} and [[Indurate]] of the [[World Eaters]].{{Fn|42g}} Later Vulkan-derived Saturnine Suits were distinguished from older Phoebian ones, which were dubbed '''Phoebian-issue Saturnine Armour'''.{{Fn|42d}}
