Overview
Various races throughout the galaxy use drop pods or similar phenomena, such as Space Marine drop pods or Tyranid Mycetic Spores. These all operate similarly, being typically launched from space down into the atmosphere at tremendous speeds before slowing their descent in one fashion or another. Ork Drop Pods use a combination of springs, retro-rokkits, and parachutes to slow their descent before impact. These are launched either from Orbiting vessels such as Ork Hulks or catapulted from giant siege engines on the ground to drop their payloads deep into enemy territory.1
Ork Drop Pods are large enough to contain either 15 Orks, 20 Gretchin, 5 clusters of Snotlings, 1 Ork Dreadnought or 5 Ork Warbikes.1
Drop Pod
As with any drop pod, the descent is dangerous. Anti-Aircraft fire may strike at the underside of the hull, damaging the wings and sending the pod careening off course to crash down upon allies, buildings, or unfavorable unfavourable terrain; incoming fire can cause internal explosions to kill or injure the orks or damaging the reverse thrusters. Should the reverse thrusters be damaged, the pod may impact the ground at higher than normal speed killing some of the orks on impact. In the absolute worst case scenario, the reverse thrusters fail entirely and the pod smashes into the ground at full speed, detonating and killing all on board and those unfortunate to be near the explosion. Particularly brave or foolhardy enemies that happen to see a drop pod heading toward from high above may attempt to shoot it down in the hopes of sending it off course, or flee out of the way before it lands upon them.13
Once landed, drop pods will detonate explosive bolts or other mechanisms to make the doors come down, and the orks will fire upon any enemies in range before exiting the pod. Occasionally, these bolts fail to detonate or perhaps the pod has crashed inside a building or bad terrain, blocking the doors. In such a case, they can only hope allies on the outside break them free. In desperation, the trapped crews allies may shoot at the pod to get the doors to come down, though this bears the risk of simply causing the pod to explode or harming the crew inside.13
