The Dark Mechanicum, or Dark Mechanicus7, referred to by themselves as the New Mechanicum6b or True Mechanicum,20a is a Chaos-affiliated counterpart to the Adeptus Mechanicus. Its origins trace back to those who pledged loyalty to Warmaster Horus at the end of the Great Crusade. The Dark Mechanicum serves as a dark "mirror" to their counterparts within the Imperium.
The tech-adepts of the Dark Mechanicum readily adopting adopted black robes and wear a perversion of the Machina Opus. The : the symbol of the Machine God but 8 with eight arrows added to make the star of Chaos and a skull with a daemonic grimace. Adepts of the Dark Mechanicum are often bestowed with mutation and other Gifts of Chaos.28

Unlike their loyal Mechanicum brethren, the Dark Mechanicus has no issue with modifying STCs or other forms of sanctioned Imperial technology.9c As a result they have no qualms about uncovering forbidden technology from the Dark Ages, such as the Silica Animus10a and Anima Mori.10b Dark Mechanicus technology is heavily intertwined with the Warp and the daemonic and they have no boundaries when it comes to genetic experimentation and advanced cybernetics that push the limit of humanity.9d As demonstrated with devices such as the Kaban Machine, the Dark Mechanicum has little to no qualms when it comes to the development of Abominable Intelligence.11 They even seek to utilise ancient androids of Chaos when possible.20c
