Heresy-Era
During the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy, the Night Lords followed standard Space Marine Legion organizationorganisation, albeit with a lower amount of breacher and siege units.70 They also maintained a command council of Captains known as the Kyroptera.15b
During this time the Night Lords would deploy "Pacification Battalions". These were formations of heavy armour and shock infantry, including the infamous Terror Squads. These would deploy to isolated worlds with the sole goal of breaking whatever limited defences they could find, then promptly ravaging the planet and its population. This served as an example for others for the price of defiance. These units would first deploy their heavy armour en-masse and once the defenders were broken and scattered, infantry as well as Land Speeders and Bikers would hunt down the survivors. The purpose of these operations was to cull and cause as much collateral damage as possible. They rarely made any attempt to hold their ground, most often departing after their brief but vicious onslaught.28c
Post-Heresy
Since the death of their Primarch, Konrad Curze, the Night Lords have been shattered as an organized organised legion. Most have fled to the Eye of Terror and now operate as disparate warbands.2a These warbands are fractious and mercenary to the extreme, mostly contenting themselves with raiding, butchery, and plundering. Many have found their way into the service of other Chaos Lords, Daemon Princes, and even Xenos warlords. For as so long as there is a chance to inflict fear and ambush on others, Night Lords will naturally be drawn to a cause.67
This style of living has led many Night Lords to become disillusioned with their identity and lack of vision. Some have even turned in their colors for other armies, as was the case with Haarken and his Gloomtalons, which eventually joined Abaddon's Black Legion.67 However, there is some recent hope as of the 13th Black Crusade that the Legion may be reunited once more by the prophetic figure known as Decimus.10
