First Sphere Sept
The Tau homeworld and the First Sphere colonies Septs are of major importance and form the hub of the empire,10b established during the First Sphere of Expansion (502.M37-936.M38)10b10c
* T'au'n, first offworld colony, Tau from this world are considered to be pioneers.7a
Second Sphere Sept
The Septs of the Second Spherewere established during the Second Sphere of Expansion( began shortly after the end of the 018.Damocles CrusadeM39 (742- ~700.M41). Of note is 10c which was launched by Aun'Wei across previously unreachable regions of space and came to an end when the Tau crossed the Damocles Gulf and reached the command borders of the Commander FarsightImperium during this period.10b
* Au'taal, a beautiful sept, whose citizens are considered easygoing and often lazy.7b
* Vash'ya seems to be primarily inhabited by members of the Air caste.7b
* T'olku or Tol'ku is known for the skill of its Ethereal diplomats.7b

Farsight Enclaves
The Farsight Expedition (~750.M41-760.M41) was sent into the gulf fifty years later, resulting in the Farsight Enclaves – not themselves Sept, but nevertheless Second Sphere worlds of the T'au'va.25
Third Sphere Sphere Sept
The Third Sphere of Expansion was convened on 977.997.M41 on the word of Aun'va.123 and Commander Shadowsun was placed in command, and secured at three new septs Septs for the Tau Empire. During the The Imperial Zeist Campaign of 999.M41, Space Marines Imperial forces counterattacked against the expanding Third Sphere, drawing the Third Sphere to a temporary halt.The three septs formed from the Third Sphere Expansion are:
* Ksi'm'yen's colonists seem to be associated with luck, subtlety and opportunistic subterfuge.7c
* Fi'rios whose pioneers are recognised for a tenacious refusal to accept defeat, tempered by a stoic acceptance of the price all must pay in the furtherance of the Greater Good.7c
* Mu'gulath Bay, previously known as the Imperial Hive World of Agrellan. (Destroyed)7c
* Velk'Han, discovered on an ancient Syrshin star chart found on the the Artefact World of Landfall,13b it is currently contested by the Imperial Achilus Crusade13a
Fifth Sphere Sphere Sept
The fleet meant for the Fourth Sphere of Expansion was thought lost for years before contact was reestablished with the survivors. No septs Septs are known to have been established during this sphere of expansion.7d Thought lost for decades, the ill-fated Fourth Sphere of Expansion reestablished contact with the Tau Empire beyond the wormhole known as the Startide Nexus.
To meet the remaining elements of the Fourth Sphere fleet, a Fifth Sphere of Expansion was launched in M42 and rapidly, worlds on the other side of the rifts have been colonized.7e
Known Fifth Sphere septs Septs include:
*Fe'saan7e
*Kor'tal7e
* Dy'aketh — formerly the Imperial world of Drachenvol7f
* Uan'Voss20
* Velk'Han, discovered between the Second and Third Sphere Expansions from an ancient Syrshin star chart found on the the Artefact World of Landfall13b ~770.M41 it is currently contested by the Imperial Achilus Crusade13a
* Hul'aan7g
Other T'au Worlds
Tau Colonies
Besides the populous septsSepts, there are also sparsely populated colonies. Only a few names are known. Locations of unstated status are put here as well.
Colonization is the main way the T'au expand their Empire outside of war against hostile worlds. Their decision to colonize a world or not, depends on if it can be an asset to the Empire and if the colony can cause the System it is in to prosper. Often the worlds selected are full of hostile lifeforms or barely habitable for the T'au.23 The colonists will have Fire Warriors to protect them though24 and over years of hard work, their worlds will become valuable resources for the T'au Empire. These colonies will then eventually turn into cities, that will serve as waystations for the T'au's further expansion efforts.23
Annexed Worlds
During the First Sphere of Expansion, the homeworlds and colonies of the Kroot and the Vespid were also incorporated into the Tau empire. Notice that these star systems are not considered septsSepts. In addition, there are an unknown number of former Imperial worlds in the T'au Empire, such as T'ros. Some or all of which might still have a Human population.
